Misfire. Spark plug, idle problems

Hey everyone im having a few issues that started to present themselves not recently, ill try and explain them the best i can.

First noticed while riding my bike started to misfire a couple times.

Went for another ride and I basically couldn't ride it. Anytime i gave it any throttle it would just jerk and lose power.

I decided to change the spark plugs and noticed one side has quite a bit of oil build up on, and when i start the bike its idling really rough to the point it sounds like its gonna choke and shut off. And same problem with the misfiring basically cant ride. And i can smell the gas when starting it now while it idles.

Wanted to try and trouble shoot this myself rather than take it in but I may be in over my head.

- If one plug is notably fouled and the other is normal(tannish over time) you are probably running on one cylinder.
- If you have a fuel programmer, first make sure it appears to be working correctly and then check that the piggyback connections on the injectors are tight.
- If all that seems fine(for now) trace back the wires from the injectors to the coils. make sure the electrical connections on them are tight(low amp ones). This problem has been reported previously on the forum.
- If all that looks good and still running bad and you have a programmer, remove it and go stock. If that makes the bike rideable then you have to troubleshoot the programmer which varies between models.

I had this happen on the 1300 tourer. It was the cobra programmer. It got to the point of fuel coming out the pipes..Removed programmer and problem fixed

change your plugs , ( nothing wrong with the old ones) and add super unleaded. your good like a jet city woman!

Had similar problem years ago on a Yamaha Virago. If removing the controller as previously suggested does not work try reversing the coils and see if problem moves. Or try and locate a used one for cheap. Coils do go bad. Also remember you might have to clean or replace the oxygen sensor in the exhaust header. It might be coated with carbon due to rich mixture.
