Hey guys, I have been batting the idea of moving my speedo into my cowl since about the day I got her. Well I have finally done it. I have built a bracket the holds my speedo and boss speakers in my cowl and it came out better then I could have hoped. Check it out and tell me what you guys think
very nicely done! I was wishing the cowl was a little bigger just the other day so it could 'house' more but the speedo fits in there very nicely. was it a ton of work to get it in place there?
Looks awesome, how hard was it to relocate the ignition to the side of the engine? Did you have to do any wire work for the move of either ignition or speedo?
Yea I got Shane's ignition kit. It's was easy to install the ignition kit after I got it off the trees. There was no rewiring needed to install either kit. I made the kit very adjustable so I was able to dial it in right where I wanted.
Need more info on this ASAP... lol. Just ordered new bars and am looking at options for relocating the speedo. Any info you could share would be awesome!
So I got in touch with OP and purchased his mount for my bike as well. I also have the green bullet cowl. I needed to relocate the speedo because I just put new bars on that did not have a place to mount it. OP's solution is spot on! He gave me the option of just the mount for the speedometer or to include speaker mounting as well. Given that I don't plan on putting speakers on, I went with just the gauge mount. The fit and finish is awesome, and for what I paid for it I couldn't be happier! He kept me updated on the status quite frequently. Install was a breeze and it is **** near infinitely adjustable. HOWEVER, you do have to relocate the ignition switch for it to work (which is a bit of a bear... but that's another story). If you have any cowl on the bike with space for it and are considering it, DO IT!! You won't regret it!!
Like bullet_cowl said, no wiring involved. Speedometer harness has tons of slack in it and the ignition harness just has to be removed from the main harness bundle and re-wrapped/re-routed. Removing the factory security bolts on the ignition switch is a bit of a task but once that's done it's a breeze.
You don't need a wiring kit for the ignition or speedo relocation kits. The speedo wires have plenty of slack and the ignition you need to split the wiring harness back about a foot, remove the tank and move the wires
Do you have a photo of just the bracket itself? I've seen the speedo mounted, and it looks really good. Just curious what the piece looks like before it's attached to the bike, and what it looks like attached without the speedo?
Am I able to purchase just the actual mount, as in just the top plate in the third picture? I ordered one from FMB but he refunded my money and won't send it because priority postage was too expensive to Australia and he refuses to send it normal post.
It adjusts through the full range of motion(there is a lot) so custom tailoring is easy. Install was simple(assuming the ignition is already relocated) it took about 20 minutes.
For anybody curious;
The speedo wire harness needs to be freed from the holders, the cover/trim will have to be removed and then the unit passed through the triple tree. Reinstall on the bracket, install cover/trim, lock down wiring and adjust the bracket to your liking and you're done.
I used a dremel with cutting wheel to remove the oem bracket+tab by cutting the weld until I could work it free. I used a flapper wheel to take the welds off then touched with some metallic gray paint I had laying around. I might go over it with chrome hobby paint and clear coat for the heck of it...for you guys with black bikes it's that much easier.
1. Where can I buy this bracket? I'd like to buy one.
2. I noticed on everyone's bike pics their speedometers are in a black case. Mine is in a chrome plastic case. It's a 2015 Green Stryker with Cowell. Were these supposed to be black or did you guys paint them?
