Default 2007 Yamaha V Star 1300 dying under low throttle

I took the stock slip on muffler off and rode around for 1000 miles to make sure I wouldn’t have any issues running straight pipes until I can get a new exhaust.

Well recently I welded on a 2” down turn on the stock piping where the muffler would slip on and changed my exhaust gaskets. I took the bike for a ride to hear how it sounded and when I was cruising in 3rd and 4th gear at low rpms (without bogging the motor down) the bike will randomly die.

The bike idles perfect and when accelerating hard the bike has no struggle. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing my bike to die?

You're probably losing back pressure causing it to run lean...straight pipes work best wide open IE drag racing etc.

Do you have any sort of tuner?

Did you ensure proper seating of the gaskets...any chance of leak?

Did you check the easy stuff like plugs, fluids etc? Any temperature concerns?

I don’t have a tuner. I did checked to see if it had an exhaust leak couldn’t hear any or feel any air leaking. Plugs are brand new and I don’t think it’s over heating the fan comes on and off like it’s suppose to and no check engine lights.

The bike sat for 2 years with fuel before I got it. I changed the plugs, oil, oil filter, and air filter.

Is there any cheap way I can get back pressure back without buying a new exhaust? I’m really tight on cash right now and my bike is the only way I have back and forth to work till I fix my car. I would put the stock muffler back on but it got damaged when the bike got laid down by the previous owner.

Put the stock muffler back on to see if it rectifies the problem...THEN you can pretty it up with some high heat paint or header wrap until you get a new muffler.

Also, you really want to flush out the lines if fuel sat in there for 2 years

The stock muffler got damaged when it got laid down. It’s dented bad and has a hole in it making the bike sound bad. Would the lollipop baffle or freeze plug baffle work or would that not make enough back pressure?

Look up lollipop baffle.. simple easy way to install a baffle / back pressure into a unrestricted exhaust. You can also order an exhaust baffle like this..

https://fortnine.ca/en/bikers-choice...D_BwE#493=2171

Any resistance in the system will induce back pressure.. so if you do the lollipop use something about 1" in diameter as a starting point. or get the other restrictor as i linked to .
