Default Rear Fender Questions

Can anyone give me a heads up on what the deal is with the rear fender when it comes to the two side bolts on each side?

Do the long black pieces (not sure what they are called, the fender struts? Fender side holder thingys?) that the bolts go through actually hold the fender in place?

I always thought they did, but this picture seems to prove otherwise - the black support pieces are gone and replaced with a sissybar attachment.

No kidding... I actually had no idea. Been wondering how I might be able to paint the bike without taking the back fender off, figured I couldn't do it because of the fender support things...

Much appreciated!

The four bolts that hold the decorative pieces on actually attach to the frame. I had my rear fender off a couple weeks ago to do some wiring for a brake light. There is also a crossbar that the fender bolts to from the top. The decorative pieces can be removed but they are a spacer for the bolts that go to the frame.
