Well like a dumass I used some "goof off" to help remove the little warning sticker on the tank below the gas cap trim. It did NOT want to just peel off. I had to rub and pick away with my fingernail. When I was done, I noticed the area was kind of faded. Apparently I took some of the clearcoat off. If you rub some oil on it, the faded area vanishes....so it looks like the paint is ok. How do I fix this? Can a paint shop just touch up an area or would the whole tank have to be redone?

I would suggest taking it to a high end detailer, a nice coat of wax and buffing and it may not be noticeable at all

MacGuire's Ultra Compound. Go buy some. This stuff is awesome.

I had the same issue when I removed the clear "protection" stickers on the rear fender under the seat.

Just put a bit on a damp micro-fibre cloth and start rubbing. You can also use it with a buffer, but I didn't have one. I'd then follow up with a coat of wax.

I guarantee this is all a bodyshop will do and probably charge you $200 to do it.

Sounds to me like some of the glue is still on there. Mine was the same way until I rubbed it all off with a rag and some alcohol. Took a lot of elbow grease though because it was stubborn.

Clay bar... mine did the same thing. Clay it once and then some wax... good to go!

In the past I have used wd40 on a rag to remove the glue left behind by stickers.. give that s shot and the wax as stated ealier.

You damaged the clear coat it cam be repaired by buffing and wax but at a latter time that area will fade out first

A heat gun/blowdryer and wd40 takes thoose factory stickers off easier , that is some killer glue they use .

I agree, buff it out and it should be fine.

well the home wax/buff job didn't do the trick. You can still see it. Looks like I'm gonna have to shell out a few bucks for my mistake

Natedog is right. The clear coat couldn't have gotten damaged bad enough that it couldn't be buffed out with rubbing compound.

Did you ever find a way to restore the luster to your clear coat?

Yes i did...i bought some compound paste at a paint supply and hand buffed it back to a shine. I used some quality polish to finish with. Took some elbow grease but worked very nicely....thanks for all the tips. Dont use goof-off.....if I had read the directions on the bottle it says not to use on automotive paint
