This is the first bike I've had that has this feature. I can't quite figure out how it works. It seems like the turn signal turns itself off about 50% of the time. What makes it turn off? Is it lean angle? Speed? Time-based?

Maybe I'm just a moron.

My understanding based on other yamaha bikes is the following things have to be in place for the self cancel:

1 - bike has to be in motion
2 - bike has to have traveled 150 meters (490 ft)
3 - 15 sec has to have elapsed

I believe the last one might be an or, but I am not sure.

It is explained in the owners manual and above sums it up fairly well. Don,t have my manual in front of me but from what i remember this explanation is fairly accurate. Has nothing to do with lean angle and it will cancel at different times due to the variables listed. I find myself cancelling manually most times but this is a great back up feature for those times you forget. Don't know why you would disconnect it. You can manually cancel anytime.

I like to put my turn signals on early, but damm auto cancel usually turns them off before I even make the turn. So I usually click my signals on a couple times for most turns.

Exactly the reason I got ride of the feature...
Mine turned off all the times and if I was the only one in a turn lane I like the signal to be on if someone enters the lane after a period of time and I'm totally stopped. The flashing light has to make you more visible!!

It's just second nature to cancel through the turn or when shifting to 2nd once you get used to it.

It won't turn off once you have stopped. According to manual. Need to be in motion.

I usually manually shut it off. I have a habit of clicking it regularly while driving from before I had this auto feature. But as stated above, it is a great backup.

I gotta disagree with that. I have had the same situation as '11 described when at a 4-way stop and making turns. Look down and notice it has turned itself off. I got mad a young girl once for almost pulling out into me as I made a left turn only to see that the signal was not on anymore.
