I know a lot of people have been wondering if the Avon 250 will rub. I just got mine for xmas and decided to put it to the test. I went for a ride with my wife(340lbs combined) down a road I knew had a big dip with a bit of speed and the top of the tire did rub on the fender mount bolt end under the support frame (see pic). It didn’t hit hard but if I would have been going faster then it would have gouged the tire pretty bad.
I have the PCS lowering links and had it down the full 2 inches still using the stock shock. I looked up the travel of the stock rear end and it is just under 4 inches. 3.88 inches if I recall correctly. I measured the tire to frame clearance once I had the 250 in place and it was around 3 ¼ inches. I knew if the bike bottomed out that it would rub, but thought if I tightened up the shock tension to the 7th notch (only 9 total) that it wouldn’t bottom out---wrong.
Fix-in my case I am just going to adjust the links to the 1 inch lowered position and that should give me just enough since I only needed under an inch more clearance in the first place—hopefully. If I had bought the Dunlop which is taller then I would probably have to go back to the stock links.
I probably could leave it as is and just make sure I take it easy over the bumps/dips/potholes, but you can’t always see those coming up when you’re in traffic. It is not worth the chance of messing up the tire, bike, or people riding it.
Pic is a bit hard to see, but you see where the bolt rubbed all the way around on the right side. You can see where I smugged the dirt with my finger on top of the mark.
