So do you have to take the battery out of the bike to charge it on a trickle charger or can you leave it in and just disconnect the cables?

Neither, Leave Battry in and don't disconnect anything. My trickle charger has leads that permantly go on the battery terminals, with a pigtail connection on outside of bike that I just plug my charger into. Very easy when setup so leaves nothing to take apart to do charging process. Here is pic where I have pigtail on right side of bike

Same here but I put the pigtail on the right side of the bike so that I would have to trip over it to get on the bike....not that I would do that.

I plug mine into a power outlet that is ounted under the seat
( Cigarette lighter Type Outlet.)
