I recently changed all my engine bolts and other bolts to black bolts. Some I had to just paint because I caouldnt find a suitable replacement. Does any one know of a good place to get bolts from?

I too would like that answer. I am in the middle of painting all the fake chrome plastics.
Not to correct a newbie, but there is no such thing as "fake chrome plastic". Chrome is chrome. Its a special paint that can be sprayed and baked on anything. Plastic, steel, a rock etc. Of course spraying on plastic is the cheaper way to go. Of course by you painting the plastic black, you now have, "fake black plastic" :)

Agreed. Especially since all "chrome" isn't equal. True chroming is a copper / nickel / chrome plating process with many variables. Spray bomb chrome paint isn't truly a chrome at all - just a shiny silver. There are many other different spray applications to simulate true chrome that isn't really chrome.
Back on topic, be careful with black bolts, some of them will rust over time - learned from expreience

Sorry Kuro - I was agreeing with you but was a bit long winded.

For the black bolts, I had replaced some on my old bike with black oxide bolts. It says that they're rust resistant, but mine did rust. I stored the bike in my garage when at home, but it did see some significant rain when at work or on a trip. I think you can get a different black coating that won't rust but I don't know off-hand. Anybody?

Black anodized aluminum wont rust. I have seen anodizing fade though.

On the chrome topic :) the engine covers are actually "real" chrome not paint. I posted in another thread the proof. If you sand them down, you can see the different layers ( i.e. chrome then nickel then copper.) I looked into it and they can chrome plastic now by infusing the plastic with silver something or other (I forget the name) this gives it the magnetic quality necessary for the plating process.

Having said that I still consider it to be "fake chrome" as well :)

Yes they do "real chrome" all of the plastics. They use special acids and current to get the copper to stick then basically plate the nickel and chrome. I have been into and worked at a plant that makes 90% of the chromed car emblems you see today around. It's a really cool process till they get the acids and crap back into the boiler....

As far as black bolts.... IMO its a waste of money.... a lot of money for a coating the will come off from tightening etc. I spray mine quick and use a small (like painting figurines) hand brush to fix the dings after I tighten them. I just spray the paint in a little puddle and dip the brush in there.
