Hay all,

I went to install new new Kuryakyn Scythe mirrors on my '11 Stryker when I ran into a problem with the RHS mount. It wouldn't turn loose, and when I put a wrench on it and gave it some muscle, I snapped the stud in half.

I have EZ-Outs, but this stud was obviously cross-threaded and probably wont spin with an EZ-out.

I'm just trying to better understand my options.

I'm guessing that I might need to drill a small centered pilot and then keep increasing in size until the stud breaks up - but that is just a guess.
After that I'll probably need to Tap the threads - I've never done this before, yet I own a Tap and Die set (in both Metric and SAE).

Any words of wisdom would be certainly welcomed.
Thanks,
Steve

Well that Sucks! I believe that right post mount is left hand thread, but won't help you now. You will have to drill out and if lucky you can get old stud drilled enough you can pry it out of there. Otherwise you would have to put a thread repair in, but will be hard to come by for left hand thread. If ya lived close enough to my shop, I would get it out of there for ya for free, but NC is a good 10 hour ride!

Wow. Dumb move of the day.
When it didn't budge at first, I tried to reverse it, but I guess I had already damaged it enough. I guees I can look for some reverse EZ-outs and see how that goes.
The good news is that it's probably not cross-threaded.

Another case of "should have read the owner's manual".

..and thanks for offer 11Stryker..much appreciated.
Thanks all.

Like you said. Prick punch center and start with small drill bit and work your way up. Worst case scenario- you break a drill bit off or worse yet an easyout. So drill slow and carefully with sharp drill bits. Patience will be your friend!

Since it is left hand thread, you should be able to drill a hole, tap it with a right hand thread, the tighten a bolt in there. As you turn the bolt to tighten , it will be turning the broken stud to the right, to loosen it. Worth a shot anyway.

That's a great idea BOOLSHOT. A couple of other methods include drilling the center out and tapping the tang of a small file into the hole to twist it out with or slotting the top of the broken bolt with a dremel and using a screwdriver to remove it. Just remember it is left hand thread. It may be a bit stubborn at first because Yamaha uses a pretty tough loctite on most of the fasteners on these bikes. sometimes a little heat can help but be cautious due to the wiring in the housing.

I was thinking about this tonight and I will definitrly try to drill, tap and screw in a short bolt. It seems like it should work. I hope to get to it before the long weekend.
Thanks to all for the great suggestions and help.

11Stryker is the lock nut also reversed thread on the right side stud? Not the lock not for the mirror itself. I'm having problems getting it to move.

Thanks. I took the mirror off and slipped a box end 17mm wrench over the stud onto the lock nut and with a little effort it came right off:thumb:.

If you have to drill and tap i would go a head and just make it a right hand thread. I don't know why yamaha has to be different like that.
I hear Ya Roger! Metric Left Hand thread- WTF LOL:confused:

Actually if they just swapped them left to right there would be some logic in that the wind would help keep things tightened but the way they have them now actually does the reverse. Maybe the winds blows differently in Japan :)

Still agree though that left hand threads tend to mess people up. I mean how many people generally encounter them ???

I have had my mirrors come loose before while riding and as soon as they start spinning- they don't stop. Really fun trying to handle bike and screw mirror back toward tight while riding. No time to stop first because mirror will have taken flight before that. LOL We do see Metric threads more often in my business, but not Left Hand Thread metric!

I think Yamaha's logic is that if you dropped the bike (not laid it down, but dropped while standing still), rather than snap the mirror off, it would just loosen it.

That's an interesting thought, but I don't think it would spin loose without loosening the lock nut. Judging by how tight mine was.
