Lane splitting is allowed if done safely. Toby and I have done slow shoulder riding when stuck in traffic on the freeway but only when the car traffic is at a stand still.
Generally we ourselves, do not lane split or shoulder ride as it isn't safe and there is so much dangerous junk on the shoulder, you really are risking damage to your bike riding there.

No, that's illegal. That's a shoulder and not a lane. You can get cited with the following:
CAVC 21755:(a) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass another vehicle upon the right only under conditions permitting that movement in safety. In no event shall that movement be made by driving off the paved or main-traveled portion of the roadway.
Lane splitting is allowed only between two lanes. Shoulders are for emergency stops/vehicles only and not traveling.

Haha, it's because they don't fit between the normal lanes. They're just convertible cars on two wheels..... don't know why, but for some reason it's always the goldwingers

Yeah that's a no no, but if I hear tires screeching behind me that where you will find me hitting throttle making some distance between me and the noise. Been rear ended 2x this year in car and I don't plan on becoming someone's hood ornament.
