I'm thinking about buying a Stryker but I'm a bit concerned about owners saying the bike chugs at low speeds and has a "clanky" transmission. That's a lot of money to spend on something and I don't want to have issues. Are all Strykers that way?

These bikes like to run at higher rpms. They do seem like they are geared a little high and they don't like to be lugged at lower rpms. Nothing wrong with that though, it's a short stroke, fuel injected, overhead cam engine with more in common with a sportbike powerplant than a harley. Sure, the they shift a little on the clunky side but it's never bothered me. I ****in love mine.

In all honesty it's a non issue. The only “clunk” I notice in the transmission is shifting from neutral to first...other than that it's all good. Also, the chugging or surging at low RPM’s is no big deal at all...if it’s surging real bad it just means you’re in the wrong gear.

If you can figure out your shift points with your rpm and speed from 1-3 gears you can eliminate the clunking sound. Where you can eliminate the clunk in first and second is low to medium rpms at 20 mph or less. That's how I get rid of it but most I the time I start her up to warm up then I take off like a bat out of **** which gives me the clunking but I have gotten used to it cause my old vstar did the same thing and I had no issues with it

What some describe as a clunk, I see more as a sound of reassurance. This is no toy bike. When it slaps into gear, you know it. There's nothing low rent about it. If you want sport bike shifting then buy a sport bike. This is 1300cc of raging power. And yes, if you're in too high a gear, you'll know it. The Stryker likes to rev at the mid to top of the rpm range, right in the powerband. With experience, you'll manage it quite well.

Stop thinking about it. Just buy it. You'll be hard pressed to find a member on this website who regrets his/her decision.

this front pulley mod above, or the O2 sensor mod also mentioned somewhere on the forum are ways that seem to counter the low speed surge. i have to wait until next year to order my bike. but i'l definitely be doing the front pulley mod

Well said Wormburner. :)

And if any of the clunking noise, as you call it, bothers you. Then get some loud pipes. Kind of hard to notice any noises with aftermarket pipes. ;D

So the chugging is from shifting too soon? Then around town you're probably in first and second gear most of the time? I'm looking at a 2012 black and a 2011 copper. Each is $9500 but the black one is about an hour away from where I live. What's a good website for accessories? Btw, thanks for all the info guys!

This weekend I'm going to test ride a Stryker, a fury and a Harley 1200 custom.....and maybe a Harley 72. Right now I'm leaning towards the Stryker because of the price.
you should lean towards the Stryker because it is hands down better than all of the other bikes you're looking at.

Aw ****. I paid $9500 for my Copper 11 new.
Yeah this happens when prices are discussed on the forum. However in my research the bike price is irrelevant. It's the out the door price that would be compared. After visiting several dealers with super low advertised prices only to find they added a whole bunch of setup and freight and DMV paperwork fees that far exceeded other dealers who had higher bike prices but did not add any junk fees. One was honest and said here is my cost, I need to make this amount of profit to keep my doors open and my staff employed, no junk fees. Take a guess which dealer I will most likely go with especially when I have to come back for service.

Price aside you have a bike you love right! Still way less expensive than a HD, more reliable and better looking.
