Well got into a small wreck on the way home today... Stupid girl texting.. Luckily only damage was small scratch on my exhaust, it's flat black so easy fix.. And my fork is scrapped up from the car, looks like it took some of the chrome off. Anybody know if I can fix it? Was thinking steel wool and some chrome polish maybe. Worst case is I can have them painted black

That lower fork tube is an Aluminum Alloy with clearcoat. you can probably polish some of it out, but may mess up clearcoat worse. Can't hurt to try now. F666ing texters anyway!!

Couldn't agree more. she should be arrested and charged with driving to endanger! As for the fork tubes yes you might be able to polish them out. Try some 2000 grit paper wet followed up with a polishing compound. That should remove most of the scuffs. I've had good luck with Meguire's ultimate compound but ymmv. Glad your ok.

Your pic looks like it is just scuffed, But if you have any dents- I would be concerned.

Yeah it is just scuffed, no dents. We hit pretty slow and it was plastic bumper... Stupid thing is there were 4 witnesses and the girl had expired insurance, yet cop didn't give her a ticket which is the law to get one, and he still blamed it on me.

You may want to wait till colder weather comes around. This is a time consuming job. May want to see if there are any polishers/buffers in your area.

Same happened to me in May. I had $3000 in damage. Took advantage of the opportunity to upgrade the exhaust, grips, pegs, intake, etc. Aftermarket parts were cheaper than stock.

Oh man that looks awesome. How did you do it? I will do that this weekend
Thanks man. It’s very easy to do yourself. I learned that it would be a little easier to remove the front wheel so I may do that next time. After I removed the front fender and hung the break caliper out of the way. I washed the forks and then rubbed them down with isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Then I taped everything off and did 6 or 7 lite coats allowing 10-20 minutes to dry between coats. The first coat needs to be extremely lite...maybe only 30% coverage. If you spray the first coat extremely lite it will dry and act as a sort of an "etch" for the additional coats to adhere to. After 3 to 4 lite coats it'll all start to come together nicely and then you can spray slightly heavier coats. The key here is patients…you want to layer several lite coats so you don’t have runs. Plasti Dip is 100% removable and will not damage the original finish at all. It’s just a protective rubberized coating. I bought my can at Wal-Mart. There are several Plasti Dip how-to videos on YouTube that helped me out. It really couldn't be any easier. Also, Be sure to remove the masking tape before the last coat dries so you don't have any tears.

DANG!! Man I'm glad you're OK that's all that matters. As far as refinishing those fork lowers you should Plasti-Dip them....I LOVE mine and the finish is holding up great. Best $7 I ever spent.

Glad you are OK. If you can smooth out those scratches as best you can prior to hitting it with PlastiDip this is great solution over just painting it black. It has a wrinkled textured which will help hide the blemish. Regular paint is so thin you are likely to see the imperfection and minor scratches through regular paint anyways. Great idea Skwerlee!

Remove the clear coat with a paint stripper, Do not sand it because you will leave sanding marks on the aluminum. If there is scratches on the aluminum from the wreck you might be able to buff them out with an aluminum buffing wheel. Then you can clear coat it or paint or plasti dip.
