I posted on the what did you do for your Stryker today thread that I crashed it into a Dodge Charger today. I didnt want to entirely hijack that thread so Id post the story here.

First of all Im ok, I went down, and only have a mildly sore right elbow.
Second, my bike is (mostly) ok. Took some scrapes but I rode it home.

Ill give some brief back ground on me, I do consider myself an inexperienced rider. Last July I took the MSP course and got my license, my first ever experience riding on the road was driving my stryker home from the dealer ship in August. When I left my house this afternoon the odometer on my bike read 842 miles. So I basically got 450 miles on last fall and 400 on so far this spring.

I left my house about 5 pm and was driving to my girlfriends house. I told her I would be there sometime between 530 and 6 just before leaving my place. Its normally a 15 minute drive there but I had gave myself a window of time to ride and to me that meant take the long way.

MY riding gear consists of an HJC Half helmet, glasses, leather coat, jeans, and zipper jump boots. I used to wear plain mechanix gloves but within the past 2 weeks Ive started wearing a pair of kevlar lined pat down gloves from work for no other reason than they fit better.

I had been out riding and it was about 545 pm I was appprox 2 miles from the girlfriends house and was approaching a "T" intersection. The intersecting road went to my right. The road I was driving on was a 2 lane paved road and the speed limit was 40 mph. I would say I was driving in the 35 40 mph range approaching this intersection maybe even slower due to past experiences of cars pulling out from the intersecting road. As I got closer I saw a red car driving toward me in the oncoming lane, saw their left signal on and the car start to turn.

First thought was oh crap they are turning I cant believe they are turning. I started a hard brake and started to process my options. My break was hard enough that I heard my tires squealing and the rear of bike was starting to slide to my right. I had a quick thought to try to steer to left into oncoming lane but I wasnt able to see if there was anythin more oncoming, thought to give throttle and turn right and try to beat them onto the road on the right, The car was moving fast enought at that time that I didnt think I would beat them.

Most reasonable option to me was to ride it out and see what happened. Due to my decelleration and their forward motion I felt there was a good chance turning it into a close call. I left off brakes quickly then back on to regain straight line travel and as I was thinking holy crap Im not going to hit. The car comes to an almost dead stop across my lane.

Well I couldnt get it slowed down enough and My front tire hit their rear passenger side wheel. my bike and me went down on our right side. I would guess I was doing between 5 and 10 mph at point of impact. probably closer to 5 than 10 I just ran out of space.

I layed on the road a few seconds and realized I felt mostly ok. Stood up to all sort of yelling asking if I was ok. Checked myself out felt my sore elbow and found a small scuff on the elbow of my coat, and a dirty right pant leg. The driver of the car pulled off the road and man that lived nearby came over asked if I was ok and helped pick my bike up and push it where the car had pulled in. The woman driving the car was in a panic, asking if I was ok, I told her I was ok, but needed a minute to calm down before I blew up. After my minute we began talking and exchanged information. Turns out she lives maybe a mile from my mom and dad, rides motorcycles, and was in a motorcycle crash that I was aware of a few years back. She acknowledge she knew she Effed up, and knows to look for bikes due to riding. She also said she panicked and stopped and by the time she tried to get on the gas it was too late.

The damage to my bike I consider pretty minimal. I got a scrape on my pipes, scraped foot peg, scraped brake pedal, scraped brake lever and bar end, and right side mirror got a little messed up.

I got very lucky with minimal damage to my body and lucky with minor damage to the bike. I felt good enough that no ambulance or hospital was needed. Under PA law if none of the vehicles needed towed and noone is going to hospital theres no need to contact police. A witness said police were called but they never showed up during the 30 mins we were there. I drove the bike home.

In the end I was shaken up, thankful I had a coat on, and will probably be purchasing a full face helemet. Im disappointed that almost every other time I ride I put my go pro camera on my handle bars and record it. The one time something exciting happens I didnt and dont have a cool video to put on youtube.

There was no damage other than a black mark on her wheel, it looks like were going to work this out between ourselves without insurance companies so I have a few questions.

Will vance and Hines sell a set of black heat shields or will a full set of twin slash staggerds have to be replaced.

My bike seemed to drive fine on the way home but I think its a good Idea to get my front end/ forks checked out since thats where I hit. Can a dealership do this or do I look for a specialized mechanic?

Overall I feel really lucky that I was able to both walk and ride away from my first and hopefully only crash. Ill try to post some pics tomorrow.

yeah man... glad you are ok... and glad the bike wasnt destroyed... my friend vic wasnt that lucky in an accident almost identical.. he had a car make a left and he hit the front wheel becuase there was no time for breaking and he was doing about 50. he broke both legs, one arm, and some internal injuries... he got really lucky to be alive. and even luckier to still be walking.. and yes he now has a new bike and is just waiting on the rods to be taken out of his leg to start riding again.

yes I would get your front end checked out at the dealership... they will be able to see if there is any problems with the front end. plus that way if they say its ok and then it breaks you can go back to them. I wear a full face helmet and its one of them ones that open the full face or just the lense.. i like it. you will probably need to call V&H to find out about the heat shields.

Glad to hear you're ok for the most part. I personally would have went through the insurance since it was her fault doesn't do anything to you and this could get costly, also to be sure you and your bike get the attention you need without delay. I would have your elbow x-rayed anyway in case of a fracture or something that isn't immediately noticable. While no cops were involved you should go down and atleast cold report it so you have yourself covered incase things with you and her don't work out.

As for the bike, I would have it checked out by the dealer to make sure the front end and bars are ok. I had to replace the bars on my dad's bike because the previous owner ran it into their garage pulling it in. It was almost unnoticable that they were bent until you tried to make tight turns and the bars came closer on one side of the tank then the other.

I took my MSP course just this month and almost every scenario my class went through I have had over the last 2 1/2 months it sounds like you were on the path of doing the right thing but her stopping through you for a loop. I would recommend the MSP to everyone as alot of riders go through things on the road every day that they make mistakes with or have been lucky to never come across certain things. Everything aside I'm very glad you are ok ;D .

You say you are going to buy a full face helmet, I know in PA they aren't required I hope you were wearing something when the accident happened! Keep the shiny side up !

Glad to hear you were OK Kilo9. That had to be quite a scary few seconds. The PAMSP is great to teach you defensive driving and always be looking ahead for what "might" happen. An extra second or two can make a huge difference, and I'm sure it did in this case. When my wife and I are riding, we have the communicators always on/open. We are always watching ahead and making sure the other person see it as well. Whether it be a person walking, or on a bicycle, or cars at intersections we are always watching out. We are new riders as well, did the PAMSP last July, so we are always driving very defensively.

We hope you and your bike's recovery goes well!

Glad to hear you ok. But I crash my stryker last year against a curve. Let me explain before anyone start laughing to hard. I am also a new rider. My stryker only has 700 miles on it. Down here in Miami FL the city has decided to start making round about on the back street in order for car not to speed. So at the end of my day on a Nice Saturday was going home on the back street and in one of those round about I try to go right and then left well for some reason I hit the throttle thinking I can make the turn better thats when I hit the side walk at 40 mph and broke my ankle and have 8 screw the hold that joint together. It was my own fault and yes I will keep riding just now I know that I need to respect the beast call stryker. The bike you ask what happen to it well I need to put 4k in to it to fix it. Which I should get back this month the guy I took it to took a long time to fix. I did not have Ins. so I had to pay out of pocket all the 4k. Now I have Ins.

P.S. I was wearing the joe rocket velocity boot they suck does not protect at all. Wear my Helmet and not jacket but now I wear everything and my new Sidi ST Air Boots very nice and will protect almost the whole leg.. Live and Learn Live and Learn

Thats my story..

Kilo,

Looking back, is there anything you feel you could've done differently to avoid the accident?

Ive been trying to replay it all night long to think if there was anything I could've done different. I cant really come up with anything significant that wouldve helped. Im a police officer and have done probably over 1000 accident reports. If I were writing the accident report for this crash I would be listing the car as Unit 1 and listing primary cause of crash as unit 1 turning without proper clearance.

I needed about 3 feet more stopping distance. Had I been really getting on the throttle I would be the first to say I was driving entirely too fast. But I cant say my speed was a major cause. I had just downshifted into 4th gear prior to the intersection and was probably doing 35-40 mph. I cant say I remember knocking it down another gear when I saw the car start to turn, Maybe I did maybe I didnt, If I didnt and and had would it have helped maybe.

Could I have avoided it by going into the oncoming lane, yes probably, I didnt have the visibility to say if there were any other cars in that lane. Not wanting to take one head on I picked ride this out and bleed off as much speeed as possible.

In order to prevent this one a few things needed to have happened.
1. car see me sooner and not turn left in front of me
2. me have 3 more feet stopping distance, whether this be me, having the oh **** that car is turning 3 feet sooner, braking 3 feet sooner, or another downshift.
3. car driver not panicking and stopping in my lane. If she had sped up and completed the turn it would have been a close call with some dirty looks and bad words exchaned.

If anyone has any other tips for me on what I couldve done to prevent im open to those suggestions as well.

Glad you are OK and the damage wasn't too major. I imagine as the riding season approaches most of us, we are going to see similar posts like these pop up, so let this be a heads up to everyone, be as careful as you can on these bikes! My cousin just had a bad accident similar to this one and is still going through skin grafs. NOT fun.

Obviously not your fault Kilo, but an extra warning for everyone to watch out for the other guy is always needed.

So, no avoidance possible it sounds like because of the lameness of the car driver.

I came up on a similar incident on my VStar 650 a year ago where a guy on a black Sportster hit a car that turned left in front of him. The rider was vaulted over the hood of the car and across the street into a drainage ditch with a concrete drain head. No helmet, shorts and tennis shoes. He was messed up bad. The kid who drove the car was just standing there with a deer in the headlights look on his face while the cops were interviewing him.

My deal is visibility. A single headlight is not enough. I find that with passing lamps on all the time, and high-beam during the day, that the incidents of people not seeing me is almost eliminated. Sometimes I forget to turn on my brights during the day but quickly find out when people start pulling out and/or turning in front of me. I put high intensity LED passing lights on my Stryker and keep the high beams on during the day.

All you can do besides lights is to cover your brakes whenever approaching an intersection or there is a chance that someone may do something stupid. Still, some times nothing can be done as it sounds like in your case Kilo.

Maybe with more riding experience there wouldve been something to do, tough to say now. Run one scenario through my head and it winds up worse. In the end I consider myself lucky, glad I was wearing what I was. If not for the coat and gloves probably wouldve had some scuffs. At 35 yrs old I was happy to get the "I told you I hated motorcycles and dont want you riding one talk from dad"

Called vance and Hines and am able to get replacement heat shields, and pricing out the other parts I can tell I need the damage is right at 505$ left a message with the car driver an hour ago to see which route were taking.

Glad you are OK brother! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Being fairly new to motorcycling I find myself being a sponge and trying to absorb from my own experiences as well as stories like your own. So far I have 1000 miles on my new bike this spring and am amazed at all the dumbasses out there that either don't see bikes or somehow assume they have the right of way.

Last year running down a two lane highway speed limit 65, this is an open highway with only a few side roads...there is a car about 3 car lengths in front of me...a car in the oncoming lane is stopped to make a left turn...I sped up to close the distance between me and the car in front thinking they might not see me and try to go for it...a pickup apparently not paying attention swerves to miss the stopped car and hits it in the right rear spinning it into our lane...both me and the car had just got by it when this happened....had I not closed the distance I probably wouldn't be telling this story.

Glad you're ok....don't dwell on what you might have done differently too much...a lot of times your first instinct is the right one.....the saftey courses are a good thing but they can't prepare you for every scenario....but seat time will.
