Are these covers on the engine housing functional or decorative? I want to remove them and paint them black, but I don't want engine fluids all over my garage.......also, does anyone know how to remove the chrome piece on the fuel tank without breaking or damaging it? ???

They are just covers. Many people have painted theirs. Should be easy to take off and paint.

I got a real cool effect by painting over the chrome with mettalic red, taping some lace over it and then spraying flat black over that. did it on all 3 engine covers and the air cleaner. Looks bad ass and I really wish I had a picture of it to post on here.
I am also curious about how to remove that ugly ass chrome thing from the gas tank.

Pull it off, it is only held on with double sided tape. Check this one out.

It's black under the covers except for a aluminum silver circle.

I used Duplicolor Low Gloss Black Engine Enamel (DE1634). It's found at Pepboys if you have them in your area.

Use fishing line like a saw to cut through the double sided tape holding the UFO on the gas tank

For the Yamaha cover I sanded and filled with JB weld, sanded smmoth and paint, done.

fill yamaha letters in with epoxy let harden sand smooth ( not by hand ) a low grit sanding wheel Spray black

I painted them with plasti dip however the one on the left side started to rub off from my boot rubbing on it
