Hey all,
I've seen several bikes here, as well as one at my dealer with the Yamaha engine guard installed. I like the "not so bulky appearance" but am concerned if this actually protects anything. Just eyeballing it, it looks as though the foot rests sticks out further than the engine guard. Can some someone speak on its functionality (engine guard)?

Consider the name, here... 'engine guards', but you're concerned that the foot rest sticks out further? The foot pegs fold, and are also cheaper and easier to replace than almost any other part on the bike.

The whole point of the engine guard is to keep engine hard parts and hopefully the bike's frame from contacting the ground, to save you from very costly repairs, or an immediate total loss (in the case of frame damage).

Gotta admit I got them in the beginning because I liked how they looked and since I hadn't ridden in 3 decades figured some paint and/or replacement on those would be way cheaper than anywhere else on the bike.

Thankfully haven't dropped it yet (2000 miles and counting) but it still serves the original purpose of looking good and saving the really expensive stuff should she ever fall down.

Admittedly looked at other bars when I was considering the 950 and they had the highway pegs etc. That would have been nice also. One aftermarket set was really nice.
In the end whatever you like and can bolt/weld to the bike is fantastic. Do what YOU like since its your bike!!
