My wife coming to rescue me from an officer coming to take my license plate (side mounted and illegal lol) - she dumped the bike on a large patch of gravel. Her wheel was turned left and tried to stop ... wheel slide out and down went the bike. It was like slow motion. After picking it up we checked it out ... the mirror scuffed a bit, brake level bent a little bit and the rear signal light scuffed a touch.

The goodness for the engine guard. A little paint and it will look ok. A few members here are sending black signal lights to replace the chrome ones, so no big deal there. I might be able to adjust the brake lever assembly a touch.

The guards did their job though ... thank goodness

Last year I crashed my suzuki S40, because of some gravel and inexperience from my part, and I have to say that If I hadn't had the engine guards I would have probably lost the bike. I traded that bike for my new stryker this year and the first thing I did was to get those engine guards.

Hope mrs Dredly is ok? Tell her she is now an experienced biker babe. lol. My wife did the same thing after only 1,000 miles on her 950. Hit a corner to tight hi the floor board mount which sent her straight to the side of the road in some gravel hit the brakes and slid into a ditch. No engine guards so there is still a dent in the tank. Busted the windshield and the headlight bucket and bent the shifter. Straightened the shifter, taped the shield and bucket together but I am not going to fix the dent and paint it until I'm sure she is done falling over. She slid in mud and fell once after that so the first thing I buy for that bike will be engine guards.

Yeah, she is fine. Thanks Toby

I should have prefaced this spill with the fact that since they brought in the noise bylaw for motorcycles last year, the missus has been on a constant tirade about how it's unfair ... blah blah blah. I believe it as well, but it doesn't consume me. LOL The plate is illegal so I was bound to get caught again. When I called her to come pick me up, she asked why and flew into a mini rage. Started on about cops this and that, then went into her now infamous reason as it being a racial thing. LOL I have long dreads which are very visible when I wear a helmet. She thinks I get pulled over for violations based solely on this. I get asked extra questions at check stops based solely on this. She usually adds the fact that I have tattoos/piercings but neither are visible with a jacket and helmet on LOL.

So ... she came into the situation all guns a'blazin. She even figured the cop was laughing at her when she dropped her bike ::) :-X Lord help our financial situation if she ever gets pulled over

Oh dear :(

This is why I hate gravel. What is it for. Didn't they invent tarmac a few centuries ago?

Engine guards were my first addition to the bike and i have never had a bike without them.
Steve has fitted them to his Raider but apparently they say on them that they are for decoration only and will not hold the bike up???????

Looking at them I am sure they would go a long way to helping protect the paintwork.
Tell Mrs D that gravel is evil. ;)

There are several that have engine guards on the Raider and have saved them from having to replace more items when the bike tips. She now knows gravel is evil. I have seen her stop though with her wheel turned one way or the other. I've told her to concentrate on stopping/slowing down with the wheel straight.

My question would be is if the Yamaha engine guard just for looks or would it help if the bike got dumped. Also glad to hear she is ok.
snowman68 ... in this case, they were worth the $$. A slight scratch on the mirror ... lever bent a bit and a minor scratch on the rear signal light.

There is a saying in the biker world.

"There are two type of bikers. Bikers who have dropped thier bikes and bikers who haven't dropped thier bike YET" ;D
That's my thoughts as well ... you are going to drop your bike - if this is the 'one time' ... not so bad :D

Yes dear god keep the reins on her, I know very well what the cops will do. I too have long hair and back many moons ago I got stop and my X accused them of profiling and harassment and thought it was appropriate to slap the cop. We both went to jail. :-[

Just bought my Stryker and am wondering which engine guards you guys purchased? I was planning to buy the Yamaha guards but Cobra makes a couple that look to provide a little more protection. Would like to hear your $0.02 on which is better...

Thanks

Hey dreadly...is your plate horizontal or vertical? Cause I think horizontal is legal in AB.

Glad to hear her and her bike are ok. I'll be in Edmonton next weekend getting the 240 Avon but on my Stryker! can't wait

Dear Mr. Dreadly: I can't have dreads cause I don't have hair. Yeah, I once had a cowlick but it fell out too. The girls where I used to work told me that my hormones were being put to other uses. Do you think this is possible ?

Can't compare since I only have the black Yamaha ones, but I like style/appearance of the ones I have and believe they would do the job.

Glad Mrs D is Ok....engine guard did it's job.....but we have to remember that is what they are designed for - low speed drops - don't expect them to do as well in a high speed situation - had a buddy get trapped a couple years ago...went down around 60 mph - engine guard wrapped around his foot which caused him to be drug down the road for about 60 ft - suffered a broken ankle and road rash-had to have his foot cut loose from the EG
