If you put in gear with the kickstand down that will kill it - if the kickstand is up and you put it in gear and it dies it's probably the kickstand switch
Do a search on this as someone posted the problem before and the relevant pages from the owner/service manual. The safety starting switch has multiples paths that either allow or don't allow the bike to be started/rode. Better to read that over rather than me try and recite it from memory.
One other question: "When you put it in gear and it dies, does it lurch before that?" If so than the clutch needs to be adjusted.
The other replies are correct but read over the pages from the manual as knowing how the starting safety circuit is supposed to work will help you troubleshoot the problem.
