If you plan on removing the tank for any reason you do not have to syphon out the gas. Their is a pet **** that you can turn off then follow the hose from the pet **** to the other end which is under the seat [easy to get to] now take 1 of your wifes good kitchen towel and stuff it under that clamp use a small flat screw driver stick it in the clamp and twist it should pop loose easily. You will have residual fuel in that line but not much thats why you need the wifes good kitchen towel. Pull the fuel line out so it hangs off the side of the bike then place the hose in one of your wifes good pots oops mean in your gas can then turn the pet **** on. you do not need to raise the bike on a jack gravity is your friend here. Once the tank is empty shut the pet **** off and finish the removal. Now that you got the tank off go ahead and pop that other clamp off and replace with small hose clamp.

I know their is a free PDF file on our bikes which is a good help. the above info was found on chapter 7 page 6 i believe

Hey,Roger, good info there, thanks.Kind of a hassle empty ing the gas from the tank.Since I only want to take the tank off to get access...Is there any reason why I can't just leave the gas in the tank ?
I don't see an issue. I plan to do the same (remove the tank for easy access) when wiring up horn replacement and heated grips.
If possible do take a nice long ride to get rid of most of the fuel. Only reason is to make the tank lighter and thus less likely to slip and get damaged...

There is a how-to on this w/ pictures that shows exactly how the tank hooks/mounts which I would also suggest looking at. As they say: "Picture's worth a thousand words..."

BTW, another option is to turn off the petcock and then remove the fuel line there, replace with a temporary hose and then gravity drain to a gas can first before removing. Use some sort of absorbent towel etc. since some fuel will leak out of the line and if possible you want to keep that off the bike.

Hey Billy ,just a follow up to our conversation on Gas Tank Removal. It was easy enough to raise both ends of the tank without disconecting anything accept the one electrical plug at the base....I propt it up on both ends and was able to wire in the Tach and I2000 Fuel Proccesor...

Fantastic. Went for a ride today and sadly could have really used the heated grips(In June for crying out loud). Want to get those installed with the horn and also do the front wheel project before maggie valley. After that I think I need to lay low on spending the funds on mods and just spend them on wasting gas!!!

So I have to take my tank off for paint, it's the last piece I need to remove. How many bolts are there and where are they? I know about the one under the seat area is there others? Also with the residual gas issue, would it be simpler to shut off the valve then run it until it dies to lessen the mess?

^ there's actually two bolts holding the gas tank in by the seat. There's also the electrical clip and reserve fuel line under the seat you need to disconnect.

Honestly a spare rag is easier than trying to run it dry. That is unless you've plastidipped everything. Then the plastidip is going to come right off from the fuel.

It sounds easy enough though, if it was rocket science half of us wouldn't be doing what we are to these bikes, lol.
