I was rear ended today in a four car pileup luckily I was in my car. I still have a stiff neck tonight and some upper back and shouldr pain. After the accident and seeing the damage I shutter to think what would have happened if I was on a bike. The driver that plowed everybody never hit his brakes when the traffic stopped. Damage to my car was not to bad as I was the front car but the impact of the first car's front end and back end of the second car was ugly. Totaled the first car for sure. All the air bags deplored including the side curtains. All the cars were towed except mine.

Since I have been shopping for a new helmet I had come across one called Reevu. Apparently this helmet has some sort of optic system that allows you to see behind you. I was looking for a modular or full face with a flip down sun visor. After today my priorities have changed and am seriously thinking this is my new helmet. Here are few links. Sample videos of what the rear view image looks like can be found on you tube. It's a little goofy looking on the rear but I would rather have chance on seeing a potential impact and becoming a hood ornament.

I am going to wager a cell phone was involved. Was at the local corner store and I saw similar happen. Dude never hit his brakes. Had just bought the car and was texting (admitted) a pic of the new car. Whammo.

Glad to hear you are ok.

Another reason to reinforce when I am at a stop light and behind someone on my bike I always am off to the side as much as possible. Make an escape route whenever and wherever you can.

I do the same ... and I always watch to ensure the person is stopping.

Glad you at ok. The samething bout happened to me a few weeks ago, I was on my bike headed to work and this b**ch bout ran me over in the fast lane. And oh yes she was talking on her cell phone. It is a good thing I'm looking around a checking my mirrors every half second or so. I actually saw her coming up behind me and I was like is this you know what gonna slow down. So I let off the gas and started tapping my brakes. She finally noticed me when I swair that she was a foot off the back of my bike. She swerved around me and I pulled up beside her hoping she would look at me but she didn't cause she knew wtf she did. So I followed her on base and about followed her to her work I was so pissed off but I didn't. But if the next time something like that happens I'm just gonna do what I did when I lived in San Antonio, pull up beside them and kick their door in.

We got rear ended a few years ago in a similar situation. We were stopped at a red light and a guy slammed into us from behind. Never hit his brakes at all. He said his dog did something to distract him and when he looked back he was on our bumper. My wife needed a few years of physio on her neck after that one.

Glad to hear you're ok man.

Stories like this make me happy i drive a truck in Winter. I'm not perfectly safe in the Truck, but Illinois drivers tend to go full retard when snow hits. I feel somewhat safe from a rear end collision in the truck.

On the Motorcycle, I actually always have concerns about this. I have had sit down talks with my wife, because she loves to be on the back so much. Being a passenger on the bike seems even less safe than a driver. It's just a lot of responsibility on our shoulders to do whatever we can to keep them safe.

You guys always keep the bike in Gear, at stop lights right?
Not if the car behind has stopped. I doubled up the clutch plate, so it's a bear sometimes in stop/go traffic

I always check my mirrors. You never know what could be behind you. A few weeks ago a guy from Maine was riding through a town just north of me. He was doing 55 mph(estimated by police) when a car hit him from the rear. The bike was pushed over a hundred feet. The rider fell off and was run over by the car. The car kept going with a flat tire from running over the bike and the rider. The car was tracked to the owners house and they were arrested. The car occupants were huffing prior to the accident. Just shows that you need to be aware even while you are at cruising speed. I hope they fry those little f#$%ers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad you're okay man. I had a man come in the lane with me the other day while I was on the bike and yes, he was on his cell phone. I was trying to pass and stay out of his blind spot but the a$$bag in front of me decided to slow down so I was stuck abeam his driver door. Needless to say he did not even glance my direction but I caught the movement of his hand on the blinker and watched him come at me. I pulled clutch and revved the throttle until he jumped and moved back over. (Really need those louder pipes!!) I am thinking that cell phones will be the death of me at some point and I'm not talking about my own. Anyway, again, glad you're okay man. Keep your eyes open guys cause there are plenty that don't.
