I noticed with both of our Stryker's, if you drive them for a while and then turn the bikes off for just a few minutes, it is hard to restart. You hit the starter and it will barely turnover. But give it an extra couple of minutes, everything is normal. It happened to me this morning when I stopped at the gas station to pickup a muffin. I drove about 20 miles, and turned the bike off for about 2-3 minutes. It seems odd, but it happens to both bikes. Anyone else experience this?

We normally just put the kickstand down to kill the engine. Then when the key is turned on the fuel pump is already on. I would say my wife notices more than I do. They are both 2011's with similar aftermarket items. It would seem like the starter (or something) gets hot, and after 5 minutes, it cools down enough without issues....but only after 2-3 minutes something is making it harder to turn over. I'm not a real mechanic, but one would think someone would be able to put a finger on it.

hmm I wonder if the kickstand down to kill it is causing something going on.. I have stopped several time in over 100 degree heat and never had any issue... maybe next time you stop flip the kill switch to kill it and see what that does... I wouldn't know what could cause it either but maybe that can narrow it down

It's probably the way you are stopping it. Have had a similar issue when I killed it and then tried to restart with it in gear and the clutch pulled in. This has also been discussed before but my "backyard" mechanic opinion/guesstimate is that it gets caught on a compression stroke and thus is harder to turn over until the engine rotates enough to have the exhaust valves release the pressure.

Sometimes just rolling the bike forward a little will compensate but best approach is to shift into neutral and then use the key and/or kill switch.

1st time this happened I totally freaked out since I was further away from home and no one was home(I thought I might need a jump). Got it started and was petrified of killing it the whole way home which ruined the rest of my ride. Of course nothing was really wrong and now when it happens I don't worry. I'm just embarrassed that I killed the bike in public

What BillyD66 says makes sense. We always put the kick stand down to stop the engine, since we heard some horror stories about people hitting the kill switch, then going to get off the bike but forgetting to put the kickstand down.

We'll try the neutral approach if we know we are only going to be stopping for a minute or two and see what happens.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm almost OCD about getting off the bike. I always use the kill switch to let the fan run if its hot out. Kick stand down and off/on from the left. I've not noticed the issue with the starter on my 11. And it get a lil warm in southern Missouri. Just my $0.02.

You might try shutting the engine off with the kill switch, then turning your key off, and reversing the process to start the bike. The kickstand kill switch is not really designed to be your 'all the time' kill switch. The computer in the bike has a certain order in which it likes things done which is why the manual will tell you the sequence to start and stop the bike.
If you consistently turn off your computer by just holding the power button down for 4 seconds, instead of going thru the proper shut down procedure (depending on operating system) the computer will over time develop boot issues and start taking longer and longer to come back up.
These bikes have computers in them...

I even tend to let the engine idle in neutral until the fan goes off when it has been a long hot slow ride up our hill... the bike seems to like that.
When I ride over in the valley and it is 100+ (Like the weekend before last) I make sure that fan is not running before turning off my bike, always turn it off with the kill switch, put the kickstand down and turn the key off... Mount and dismount from the left. Basic motorcycle safety course training.

this has all already been discussed its the transmission/clutch that is adding the the extra lug on the starter to turn over. the kill switch, kick stand switch and key switch are all in basically the same circuit for ignition.
