I just purchased a progressive rate spring off eBay that is listed as a progressive spring but the seller isn't 100% sure it's a progressive spring.

How can I tell if it really is? There is no writing on the spring.

Typically, on a progressive rate spring you'll see the coils get closer and closer together as it gets closer to one end. A normal spring is pretty much equidistant between all the coils until the ends. Check out this image for visual reference: Normal on the left and progressive on the right. Dual rate in the middle.

So this is a stocker

It isn't a progressive spring but that doesn't mean it is stock. Standard rate springs are measured by the pressure required to compress them. The stock spring takes something like 760 lbs. (IIRC). There are 900 lb and 1100 lb springs too. Some folks confuse stiffer with progressive.

Actually, it could be a progressive spring. Here is a Progressive (brand name) progressive rear shock. It has equidistant coils. It probably has a varying hardness end-to-end.

You actually have a valid point here.

However: This looks like Progressive's 465 series http://www.progressivesuspension.com/465/index.html and nowhere under it's description does it say it performs as an actual progressive spring. All of the other progressive rated springs state as such; this however does not. Show the part number and a link to the description and I'll crawl back into my cave again :)

That is a 465 series. Some folks confuse stiffer with progressive, and still others confuse Progressive with progressive :/. Linear as it may be, the 465 is an amazing shock (he says in an attempt to deflect)!
