So im looking to paint over the vast majority of chrome on the bike. Having never done this before i was hoping for some advice on how to do it right.

Krylon plastic paint has no prep. Wipe it clean and spray. Not good for high temps though. Just painted some chrome plastic spikes with it. 3 light coats looks great.

Krylon Fusion is the easiest and thats what I did the first time. I just finished respraying all the parts I did in glossy black Fusion with some glossy black Lacquer. It looks way better. I found the Fusion gloss to be not as glossy as I'd hoped, but the thing that bugged me the most was in the sun it looks dark grey with no "depth." The Lacquer requires more work (i.e. sand, prime, sand, base coat, sand, clear coat, sand, buff, polish. Well worth it though. :)

In short if you're going flat black then go with the Fusion. If you're going glossy, go with the Lacquer.

Fusion I believe is an Enamel. They never come out as nice as lacquer.

If you go with the Fusion or other enamel and decide you dont like it, you can switch to a lacquer. Lacquer on top of enamel is OK.

I took some pictures of the spikes I painted. Small spikes are Krylon Satin;
Bigger spikes are Duplicolor satin.
Smaller spikes seem to have a little shine and the big spikes seem a little duller with a touch of "gray". Pictures are a little deceiving though. I personally like the Krylon.

UPDATE; side by side with the mounts for the front marker lights, Duplicolor has a better match. Have to get the rest of the bike to check on the rest.

Click on the pictures in the album to make it bigger.

Got them here.

33MM for forks, 15/16 for the rest.
Call to put an order in or the shipping will be more than the spikes.

The bigger ones are supposed to go on the end of the forks at the bottom. Smaller ones can go on top of the fork nut and finish off the end of the frame ends at bottom of frames. Haven't got around to mounting them yet other than the frame ends.

I ended up going with Krylon, sanded down and sprayed on with no issues. On a side note i am mechanically challenged and this was a snap. Ignition cover came out perfect, speedo cover i sprayed on in 35 degree weather cause i have no patience, this i need to redo. Ignition covir photo below.

Yes it is best to use a self etching primer and it is not necessary to sand the chrome if you us a chemical cleaner/etcher on the chrome first such as liquid sandpaper this way you get a much cleaner smoother surface to start with without scratching or ruining the surface of the chrome. Thus if you don't like the paint job you can strip the paint back down to the chrome and throw some polish back on it and you good to go.
