So my bike has 520 ish miles on it. I was running errands on it today, it was in the mid eighties for temperature. I went through the bank drive through, just hit the kill switch, did my deposit yada yada. Flipped the switch to run, fired it up and it was making a weird whistling whine noise. I took off, figured the fan was going nuts, couldnt think of what else it could be. Well, it was bugging me, so I pulled over on a side street, shut it off..... and... The engine quit but the starter was turning over full bore. I was like WTF? Turned the key on, hit the starter switch, flipped the run switch, turned key on off, whipped out the kick stand and threw it in gear thinking it would mabye kill the power to the relay... Still nothing! I even let the clutch out in gear and it kept thumping away! I ripped the seat off, hoping for the right size wrench in the tool kit for the battery. YES there was ! I unscrewed the negative cable and finally the embarrassment was over! This all lasted about a minute and a half. Nothing like people staring at you like your an idiot!

While this was happening, I had turned the ignition key back to run, and nothing was happening, not even the horn worked. Very odd yes. I am an automotive mechanic, so I am pretty savvy with mechanical and electronic stuff, but dang this was weird.

So i touched the Cable back to the battery and nothing happened, so I hooked it up, turned it on , fired it up, and it seemed fine! Drove it about twenty more miles with no issues.

I went to my dealer and he said that a wire could have been pinched or routed wrong, but no problem, it will be covered under warranty. Its near the week end so I didn't leave it, if it happens again I know how to kill it. lol

I personally think the Starter solenoid stuck on it. The bike was VERY warm from being in stop and go traffic before I shut it off at the bank.

I think the starter being right behind a fan blowing hot air is kinda stupid. My fingers are crossed, hoping it wont happen again.

I am very impressed with the starter and battery. I cant believe either wasn't toast!

I've put 56 miles in near 100F temps the other day during a freeway close where we were routed through the city and it was stop go for 45 minutes and
I can't tell you how impressed I am with this bike handling it.
The whole time I thought maybe I should pull off under some shade and give it a bit before going further, but kept on going
and it just laughed the whole way.

Very sorry you had a misfortune like you did. Good to know what to do if it does happen though.
Keep us updated, I'm curious if there is something else going on.

I'd check more back by the solinoid for a pinched wire,I havn't checked to see where its at, but there usualy back by the batt under the side cover. More likely that was your problem, the starters are usually a fixed gear with a bendix inside the case?
