I had a choice between a new stryker and a very lightly used Dyna. I am starting to question my purchase. The reason, accessories.

I don't mind people making a buck, but $600+ dollars for a backrest, luggage rack, and pad? We are talking maybe, including chroming, $100 in materials. Everything is stamped and laser cut which means you program it once and a machine can make them forever.

I can get the same Harley accessories for about 70% of Yamaha.

Same with aftermarket, $300 for a fiberglass radiator cover? Really, that's $30 in materials and maybe another $30 in prep (light sanding).

Its insane, but I think there is a light on the horizon. Its called 3D printing. Pretty soon the average Joe will be able to print their own plastic parts at low cost, and metal will soon follow.

All these vendors that have enjoyed 300% or more mark up will be faced with the prospect of someone downloading printing specs of the web and paying to have a part printed at VERY low cost.

Yea I know what your saying. It's really the old supply and demand thing. Limited market means high prices. What really burns me is the prices for replacement parts for some of the aftermarket stuff. I checked in with Cobra to find out about a replacement heat shield for one of my pipes (got a small nick in the chrome from a mishap before they were installed). Let's just say the price they quoted for something they could easily pull of the line and stick in a box was a bit outrageous. Not what I would call customer friendly. I guess I'm kind of old school but I remember when companies would go out of their way to keep a customer happy and not just reach for your wallet at every chance. Be happy knowing that the Yamaha will give you many years of reliable service.

I am figuring if you take the price difference between what you would have paid for the Harley and what you paid for the Stryker and use that for accessories you will still come out ahead. Accessories are way to expensive, we all know that, but its the price you pay for a luxury which a motorcycle is considered these days. It does suck though...

Well said and 100% agree. Most Dynas are 4 to 5 thousand more than the Stryker. And with Yamaha you also get reliability!!

This one was used (a year old with a about 2k on it).

Lets be honest. If anyone has the skill, and more importantly, time to draw up lets say a backrest design a local machine shop can make it. Its not hard, its flat with essential two bends. Its a simple cut, drill, and two rolls. The bars are even easier.

Yeah it does get pretty pricey!
I think these how to and remodeling shows are what is driving the price up.

For example:

I was going to do my private fence and according to my calculations, my material would be $1200. I don't really have the time so I figured I would hire someone to do it. In my head I was thinking $1200x2=$2400 for this job. Ok, I can part with that. Well, I had 3 people bid. They want $7000 to $10,000 to do my fence.
WTH, since when do people with PHD's start doing fence's!

Guess my honeydo list just got bigger.

I agree some things can be a little pricey but your price quote is on the high high side...
Got the fixed tall midnight setup and it was < $350 delivered from accessories4bikes. Granted they have to order it and then ship to you which creates a delay but they are reasonable as are other on-line retailers and personally my dealer price matches. Cannot hold them responsible for sales tax since that is the law and they don't profit from it. Plus we all of course report that accurately on our taxes anyway...

No doubt Harley has more aftermarket options. That is just the way it is when you are competing against the market leader.

In the end I hope you are happy which ever way you go. Any model will be a drain on your finances :)
Was too busy today and didn't get a chance to ride. Saw many bikes while out on errands and was very jealous!!

3D is here now. But unless the average Joe can afford $20,000 for the printer. Good luck:biggrin1:

They are expensive but admittedly the quality is top notch. The back rest is a rock solid piece of hardware in my opinion. The pad well... that is way over priced for what it is. I bought my bike from a Yamaha employee and it's interesting to get an insiders perspective on how these accessories come about. Each bolt on accessory part has to get a stamp of approval from the legal department because it is all about liability when you are as big as Yamaha. This process of going back and forth between engineering and legal drives up costs that other third party manufacturers don't incur.

That is true Strykeback! Much more into just cutting and painting to make these products. Companys have many costs that the individual rarely knows unless they own a business themselves.
