So I get a letter from Yamaha today in regards to purchasing the Y.E.S. warranty for the Stryker.. I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on this.. I am definitely considering getting it.. If I do I would be looking at the 4 year plan.. According to the letter it says the 4 year plan would come to total of 738, however I did a quick search online and a dealership in Colorado is offering the same warranty for 375 on ebay.... I read on another forum that the ebay auctions are legit and that you can purchase it for 375 and that any dealer in the country with the exceptions of dealers in Florida and Washington must accept it for repairs.. Just wanted to get some opinions if the warranty is worth it.. Also wanted to see what others paid for their extended warranties if purchased.. Thanks

I got a 2 year extended warranty from my dealer for $210 dollars, but as I looked back at it I didn’t really need it. I sometimes think those extended warranties are a waste of money and it just puts more money in the pockets of the dealers. Just my .10 cents worth...???

I see warranties like I do insurance. Great when you need them but how often do you really need them? Great for peace of mind or if you have a dark cloud over your head. If it helps you sleep at night, buy the warranty. Sometimes peace of mind is worth it.

Me, I'm bettin' all my bucks on Japanese engineering and praying nothing will happen 'cause I've darn near voided all the warranty aspects with mods :p

I posted this over a year ago but wanted to copy and paste it here because I thought it may be helpful to our newer members...

My good mechanic friend shed some light on this factory extended warranty subject the other day while he was doing my 4k service at his independent shop. He told me that there’s nothing wrong with getting the Yamaha Y.E.S. service program if it makes you feel more comfortable. That being said…in his many years of experience with modern Yamaha motorcycles he’s noticed a theme. The rare failures he’s seen occur during or after the one year factory warranty period often times have a factory recall associated with them so you don’t have to pay for the repairs anyhow. Just some food for thought.

I bought a 5 year extended plan when I bought the bike. I think I pretty much wasted my money on that gig. A guy I work with now was a yamaha tech for some time and told me that the warranty companies (and the one I bought in particular) will use any excuse not to cover something, and they get away with it most of the time.

In my case.. I've got over 28k miles on mine and nobody but me has touched it. I did all the maintenance by the book, but since didn't keep all my receipts, if any major engine problems happen I'm screwed.

I didn't go with an extended warranted. My reasoning was that even though $600+ isn't much considering what the coast of repairs could be, I'm banking on the fact that it's a brand new vehicle and the quality of Yamaha has proven itself over many years and many products and it should not have any major issues for many years and tens of thousand of miles if not hundreds of thousands. Of course there is always the possibility that parts may fail or go bad prematurely but I'll keep my fingers crossed. lol.

On the other hand I just bought a used vehicle even though it's not real old, 2006 Honda Ridgeline RTS it is used and it's our main transportation and to have the peace of mind knowing that it will be fixed without a penny out of my pocket I bought a very extensive expensive warranty that covers everything for then next 4 years, electrical, drive train, towing, car rental, hotel stay if out of town and meals while it's being fixed etc. $3,600. Really expensive but ads only $15 a month to my payments. Got it for $14,900. Got a good deal considering they are going for $19,000+ with the same mileage on them. Figured since I got it for 3 or 4k less than I could find one any where else in Ca. I would get that warranty to go with it. Even though it is a Honda and are noted for their reliability. Peace of mind that I know I can go any where for the next 4 years knowing all it will coast me is gas and oil changes.
BTW for a 255 hp 4 wheel drive truck with a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs and load of 3/4 of a tun it get's near 25 mpg freeway. To me that's pretty impressive. My little Malibu that I used for a trade in got 30 mpg.

Anyway back to the warranty thing. to me peace of mind is priceless when it comes to your main transportation that you depend on especially if you live on a functional ranch in the middle of nowhere as I do. You never know when you might have to evacuate from fire or what ever. got to be ready to go at the drop of a hat . The Stryker and other bikes are recreational luxury vehicles and if they break down they can sit until I can afford to fix them. Not a necessity to spend unnecessary money on them.

Like everyone else said: to each their own and if it makes you feel better/sleep at night then go for it. Its all about what level of risk you are willing to assume.

I have till July to decide on mine and I haven't made that decision yet. Even though I can wrench a fair amount it is still a pretty good option should a hard to replace part go. Yamaha has a solid reputation but the Stryker is only 2 years into production so not a lot of history there. I know it has borrowed parts and again Yamaha's are generally solid but things do breakdown...

Years ago my friend who was a service manager was always getting asked his opinion, getting chewed out or something else concerning warranties. He had these things to say in addition to the above:

- Warranties are simply insurance in that for a little bit of money they protect you from spending a lot of money in the event something major breaks that is not part of a recall.
- He did say to always get the warranty from the manufacturer since they generally can be used wherever(great if you move or have an issue at a particular dealership), generally can be transferred and in his case they tended to just replace parts verses trying to repair them like some of the other extended warranties did.
- His final observation was that at the end of X years people would either be happy or mad depending if they broke even etc. He said he never saw the same people complain that in a given year they wasted all that money on health insurance since they didn't get sick, break something or have to go to the hospital!!

I never buy a extended warranty on anything. Never have and never will. I do all my own work and feel good about it. Take time, care, and common sense, go slowly. JMHO

I currently have 2 Yamaha cycles, my 2007 FZ1 was purchased brand new in Apr 2010 and I did not purchase the YES plan, last year my rectifier ($132) went out about 2 months after the warranty. Though this may be an isolated case, like others have said if it brings you peice of mind then get it. I haven't had any other issues with my FZ1 since then and I have 24,856 miles on it. This time around I purchased the YES plan from my dealer that was expensive, but for 4 yrs and fully refundable if it's not used. So if something breaks that's not expensive I won't use it in an attempt get my full refund 4 yrs down the road. Stupid if you ask me but it made me feel better "at the time" lol.

Looking to pull the trigger this week on a Stryker. I have the option to purchase a multiple year YES warranty for really cheap and have mixed feelings on these things. I have lost and won on these warranties. This is my first Yamaha product and first motorcycle for that fact so I am not sure what can go wrong. I know there is a lot of electonics stuff on the bike for the computer to control the fuel injectors, like piston postition sensors, throttle sensors and the like, but bikes seems fairly straight forward mechanically beyond that.

I have read the thread however my question goes out to the long standing members who have thousands of miles on your bikes. Has there been any repairs (parts or labor) that were or would have been covered by a warranty if one were in place?

Not long term owner(and 1st Yamaha) so I'm interested as well to longer owners' opinions. I have till July to pull the trigger.
Note, however, that the Stryker has only been in production since 2011 so at best people have 2 years worth of history...

One thought I have for you is that depending on the number and extent of mods you plan on performing you might get less and less out of the warranty. Of course they cannot negate the entire warranty because you did a few things but the more systems you "adjust" the more I think they'll potentially not cover.

Plus, and just my opinion, but if you do the mods yourself then I'm guessing the dealer isn't going to be totally motivated to go to bat for you. In other words, if the only time they see you is when you try and get a warranty claim I just don't see them working that hard on your benefit even though the money comes from Yamaha and not their pockets. This is a large portion of my dilemma. I do 98% of the work myself but I do try and get some parts from them so I'm hoping to keep our relationship going. They gave me what I thought was a good deal on the bike and have tried to price match stuff as well.

Based on what I think I'll have to pay for the warranty(again getting off eBay from another dealer won't make my relationship better IMO) and the hourly rate etc. I'm guessing I'd have to have 2 covered repairs to break even. I'm around Chicago so I ride about 1/2 of the year and the warranty would be for a total of 5 years which adds to my dilemma. And, if the failure is an easy job and you are talking parts only then the breakeven number goes up.

So after this lengthy reply you can probably infer that I haven't made my mind up on this one. Once spring comes and I start riding again and get the YES paperwork from Yamaha I can see if the dealer has any wiggle room in their price.
If it makes you sleep better at night then money well spent. I'm under warranty now so if the spring start-up doesn't go as planned no big deal since it's covered ;D

Go and jump out of an Airplane, it will clear your mind. You will see things different and enjoy what life brings you. Just my 2 cents! Life is short.
I actually have insurance for that!! Unless the fine print mentions something about not jumping out of planes... Haven't had a need to look that deep into the policy ;D

I don't get the reference "carry my ugly stick with me"?

As to mods and warranty coverage I know this becomes sticky real quick. Had this issue when I lifted my truck 4" & changed tire sizes. 1st gear grenaded at 88k and new rtranny was needed. The dealer went to bat for me so that a warranty rep would not come out and deny the claim due to the modification. Got away with winning on that one. Paid $1300 for the warranty when the truck was new, the new tranny was $2900 OTD and that was not the only warranty claim by any means by that point. I figured I got about 3x my money out of that investment.

The bike is used and stock for the most part. I plan to keep it that way for some time as I promised the Mrs to not get carried away for awhile. I know it comes down to what I feel comfortable with but hate to throw money away when there is a low likely occurance of something going wrong. Hence I was hoping to get some feed back from other owner who might have had thiers since early 2011.
