That depends on who you ask. I have been running modified air box and non stock pipes and no problems on my VTX.zona said:I saw it in one of the discussion. I think Toby, or 11 mentioned it. But if you just change the air box alone and keep the original pipes. I wouldn't need add a tuner. That's also vise versa on changing the pipes and keeping the stick air box. But if you change both you have to get a tuner. Is that correct?
They feel good. Was snowing and raining yesterday and colder than a well diggers ass today, haven't truly tested them yet lolBoolshot said:How do you like the grips? I have different Kuryakyn grips, and I like them. I was surprised how much bigger they are than stock .

Let me see if I can update the way I see and feel about the subject of mod changes and the need for upgrading FM systems or not.SmokenJOE said:That depends on who you ask. +1 For me, I broke in my bike on the cautious side. With all brand new parts, I gave time and slower speeds to allow those parts to better mesh with each other, and create the wear in points a little bit slower. I did not go above 60 MPH for the first 2,000 miles. Talk aout torture, but I figured it was best for my engine. I had he delivered with 1 mile on her. I now have 11,535 miles, give or take a few. I changed the stock air box out first, and noticed that my bike ran hotter than normal. That is when I started doing some more research on the whole fm system info. When I replaced the pipes, my Cobra at unit was still a week out. I wanted to see a difference. There was a difference in take off, throttle was not as responsive, and she idled rough, and the engine was still running hot. Since installing the Cobra unit, engine runs much cooler, throttle response is crisp, take off is faster, and idling has smoothed out.Toby said:Let me see if I can update the way I see and feel about the subject of mod changes and the need for upgrading FM systems or not.SmokenJOE said:That depends on who you ask. First of all and probably the most important thing to consider, and I don't think this point has been brought up yet, is that each motor even though they may have come off the factory production line back to back and put together with the exact same kind of parts, will have slightly different tolerances in internal parts especially if the break in period is done by two different ridding styles. Thus causing a slight difference in the way the fuel burns, one may be slightly more lean than the other. End result, two exact same bikes, one may be just slightly faster than the other and the other getting better mpg etc. (Note not to be confused with the blue one being faster than the red, black or copper.) lol.
The EFI ECU are all programed, mapped the same for each bike. They do not compensate for such a slight change.
When you start changing performance parts that effect the way fuel burns you basically increase the max and min ends of the perimeters of fuel/air mixture to the combustion chamber.
The question being will the stock ECU compensate or will it need a up grade?
Getting to the point of all this rambling, due to the vast amount of variables and the slight differences in internal tolerances, two bikes with the same mods, one may be pushed beyond the capabilities of the stock ECU and the other not. Also the same mapping for a upgraded FMS may not work the same on both bikes.
That's why some guys with the same mods have problems and some don't.
Because of all this the way I feel about it now is I would recommend that if you have any concern, question or feel your bike is not running like you think it should after doing any mods, take it to a shop and have them test it and/or dial it in, tune it, get the FMS mapped specifically to your bike.
