Kinda sorta home-made saddle bags

I took some 40mm ammo cans, whipped up some brackets out of 1/2" square tubing and welded everything together.

Oh, and I sand blasted and painted them too. But I can tell already the paint's not going to hold up too well. :'(

Do I get to call it a custom yet?

That looks SICK! Very original.
Custom points for sure!
Those look frickin awesome. Nice job
Cool, you worked it all out. I still think ammo bags would be cool with a military theme. Slanting them would probably be a PITA? Nice job, did they come out as strong as you wanted them?
The cans themselves with the brackets welded to them seem sturdy as can be. Going down the road, though, it seemed like the 8mm bolts themselves were flexing. Hard to keep an eye on it going down the freeway, but it seemed like the bottom of the cans were swinging 1/2" or so. Heavy bastards. I wound up taking some 1" flat bar and bolting it between the cans and the passenger heel guards. Haven't ridden it yet. Hope they're a bit stiffer. Though when I rode it back into the driveway after my photo op, the bolt for the left bottom **** near took out the belt gaurd. I had the take off the top half of the belt guard until I figure something out..

Thanks for the help along the way, SJ.
I did learn that painting and welding are not among my skills. Though with enough paint on top of them, my welds looked a lot better. And I lucked out; most of the runs in the paint are on the back side of the cans...
Well a tip from a weld inspector (on boilers) and a person who has done R stamp welds. On a piece that looks ugly that is not under pressure, use a grinding wheel and body filler to make it look like a machine.
I award you 1000 points for originality, handiness, practicality, and overall awesomeness. I deduct 30 for aesthetics :p I can really appreciate the thought and work that went into this. But the boxiness doesn't fit the curvess of the bike at all.

But I'm the kind to choose form over function. That's just me :)
It's not ideal, I'll grant you. This project started because my cheapo throw-overs were falling apart and scuffing my paint, and I really wanted hard bags. Two problems, though; I'm kinda broke right now and I really down like the plastic tub look of most of the hard bags I've seen, or the angles for that matter...

So the idea was, this would be cheap and easy, and I actually like the look a little better than most of the other setups I've seen. Too bad it turned out not so cheap. I think I wound up spending about $120 on this project, and probably a solid 18 hours of work over a couple weeks.. Still, a temporary deal until I find something I really like and I have some extra duckets to spend on it.
That is definatly custom and an awesome idea. To bad you already have the V&H on.. you could always run with something like this..

Those won't really go with my Stryker, but if I had the money I would buy a bike just to build around those.

Looks reasonable. The extra weight should help handling in the twisties I'm sure.

i am getting ready to put some on mine. i have the green bullet cowl and everyone says it looks military so they should look very nice. i am going with the .50 cal thought i like the look better and i have a trunk bag so storage is not as big of issue. i have the cans just need to get the brackets cut out and tapped. ill post some pics when shes done.

Ive had some ammo cans on mine for a couple years. They are tough and get alot of attention. Nice work.
