Hey all
I just went for my first longer type trip yesterday. Rode just over 500 miles. Saw some cool ****...met up with a few people...just had a blast riding.
Did a lil of everything...backroads, lil towns, and interstate.

I don't have a windshield or fairing and one thing I noticed was how tired my arms and shoulders would get after about 100 miles of 70-75mph just from trying to hold on....haha. In the future ill probly stop about every 60 miles or so anyways to stretch and shake out the numbness.

Of course my throttle hand cramps up but Ive already ordered a throttle boss....just waitin to get it.

I can get used to the wind and the bugs....but one thing that really bothered me was how LOUD the wind was. I wear a half helmet so my ears are exposed.

So....do u guys wear ear plugs?
I was even thinking of just popping in my earbuds and listening to music but that just seems unsafe to me for some reason. I don't know why....maybe cuz I would never do that in a car....haha.

So I guess what I'm looking for here is some advice on what other riders with no windshield or fairing do on longer type trips.

I've got another one planned for later this week...400 miles there...crash in hotel...then 400 back next morning.

Any advice is greatly apprecciated.

It's reportedly not the coolest look but for longer rides or freeway speeds I prefer the full face over my halfie for that reason and it's much easier on my eyes. I feel I am not concentrating so much on trying to keep them open with the wind in my eyes even though I have specific motorcycle glasses. My modular helmet work nice as it gives me the best options. I can flip it open at lights and at city street speeds when I want air and drop it down for the highway. I plan to add the Sena bluetooth so I can have some tunes to listen to.

I always ride with THIS full face helmet to avoid the neck strain.
It makes your head aerodynamic for one, and it's much quieter for two, AND I personally HATE taking bees to the face!
I have the short Star boulevard windscreen and while it does nothing for your head it does deflect the wind off your chest so you can relax more.
Since it's so small it really doesn't detract from the "cool factor" of the Stryker, it's almost invisible.
1/2 helmets act like a parachute on your head... they cause more neck strain than I can stand and I'd rather be comfortable than cool!

My first helmet was a half helmet and after I rode on the interstate with that thing one time I got rid of it and got the same model as you AR. Love that thing! But while it doesn't try to pull my head off my shoulders like the halfie, the buffeting at 80+ makes me feel like a rag doll. I wanted the bullet fairing so bad but all I read is that it does nothing for this. I really don't like the bat wing fairings but I guess that is what i'm gonna have to get if I wanna do the interstate thing. Really doesn't pay to be 6'3 and sit so tall in the seat sometimes.

I used to wear a full face on my last bike, but I got a half helmet when I got my Stryker. I wore my full face one time when I had to make an early morning ride to Lindby. I felt like the full face restricted my vision. I felt separated from the road. I like the half helmet much better. It is much quieter with the full face though..

I'm gonna have THESE guys make me a taller windscreen but not so tall that I'm looking through it. this might fit the bill for you???
It's a good looker too!

Thnx for the advice. I might look into the full helmet. I was also lookin a rfle shield cuz they are small. But I tried searching and didn't see how they mount. I'd really like it to be quick detatch.

Sorry we couldn't meet up. If we had you would have seen the rifle windshield. I have the 17" rifle. It attached to the mounts of the boulevard, but no its not quick release. However, I can change from the boulevard to the rifle in less than 5 mins. I also wear a full face helmet when I know I will be riding on the interstate. Half helmet just puts way too much strain on the neck and shoulders. Only wear the half helmet around town.

Hope we get a chance to meet up again before riding season is over. Let me know if you are going to be in the area.

Hey AR, I had Rifle make a 17" for me in the bronze. I am 5'9" and would have like to had it taller as the wind now hits the top part of helmet where as had I had them do like a 20 or 21 I think I would like it more. Not sure if I could have done larger though on the Blvd mount.

Rifle uses the OEM mounts. They just sell the replacement or upgrade (size and tint options) polycarbonate shield

Are you looking over it or through it when you ride?

I use those cylindrical foam ear plugs. You can't even see them unless you really look. I wear a skull cap novelty..(only because we HAVE a helmet law here). I am going to sew some leather inserts onto the straps coming down from the helmet to see if that help. I found a majority of the wind noise comes from that.

Other than that I do my best to avoid highway/turnpike riding, unless I absolutely have to. It's just not that fun.

If I understand right, the Rifle shields would not work with say the Memphis Shades quick release mounts? You would have to use the Yamaha shield mounts? Reason I'm asking is it would be nice to have the bullet fairing for everyday riding and put on the Rifle when I know I would be going interstate speeds.

Well....after lookin around...I found a shield/fairing that I may actually like. Slipstream stealth. Sorry can't post a link right now. Its like a universal poormans batwing. At 140 bucks its at least worth a try. If I don't like it....I'm not out that much.

I used to wear the full face or ear plugs depending on the weather... Lately though, I've been wrapping a bandana around my face and tying the knot just behind my ears. It softens the sting of the bugs, it keeps the wind out of my ears, and (IMO) it looks way better than a full face or bright orange plugs sticking out of your ears... I do like that SS Stealth though, and I've been contemplating getting one for a few months now. Maybe when the temperatures start dropping I'll actually go through with it.

Look into the National Cycle Switchblade. They have 4 sizes and they're quick release so you can take it off for around town rides. I have the deflector and the chopped and am very satisfied with them.
