I am a hipocrit I use to think guys with loud pipes were just being up noxious now I have loud pipes and I have them cause I like the sound. If they help me get noticed by a cager so I don't get hit then thats good but it's not the reason I have them cagers have a responsibility to look for us just as if we have to look for them. So I am not necessarily an advocate for load pipes save lives but if they do so be it. I hope you all understand the way I am coming across.

As I have told these stories before It my be rare but nut unique just to me and whether or not it save my life only god knows. But loud pipes scare wild animals. Once on the old Virago (shot gun pipes) a bear on a narrow mountain road turned sideways and looked at me as I came to stop, no where to go revved my pipes and he decided to run up a hill. Another time a bull was in the middle of the road, wife in front of me on her bike beeped her horn, meep meep, the bull put his head down and looked right at her and stopped chewing. Not good, Stryker with drilled baffles I revved, honk and screamed and finally got him to turn and go the other way. Scarey to say the least.

Cobra Slip-On saved my ass just two days ago. Not even a block from my house I noticed a lady backing out of her drive, I slowed down, she stopped half way out of her driveway so I started to speed up a little. Just before I got to her driveway she came out fast I honked the piece of crap horn we got and she didn't even blink. I pulled the clutch in and revved it as I came to a abrupt stop, she slammed on her brakes. I just waved and she shook her head. Later that day I saw her sitting at the end of her driveway in a lawn chair, she waved me over. I stopped and her exact words were "I will never curse about another biker with loud exhaust, I'm so sorry". ;D

LOUD PIPES MAKE NOISE. There is no way around it. They are certainly not a substitute for diligent defensive driving and if they instill a false sense of confidence as body armor and helmets can then they are a bad thing. For me, I can't rely on other drivers to avoid me. I must rely on my skills and instinct to avoid them. Maybe a tad of luck helps also. Who can hear loud pipes or sirens for that matter when they distracted by cell phones and texting with the radio or A/C turned up anyway?

My opinion is that there are very few instances when loud pipes may actually help. For the most part they are just Obnoxious, and give bikers a bad name. I know when I am in my Cage, my system is bumping and I am not hearing them. Doesnt mean I am not watching out for my fellow biker but I am not hearing them god awful loud pipes. Not trying to start trouble, I know alot of members here love them loud but I am just not an advocate for that deafening sound. To each his own and this is just my personal opinion. Let em' fly if you feel the need.

I like louder pipes but not obnoxiously loud pipes, my buddy rock his no baffle pipes and I ride out front 90% of the time because they get on my nerves
Yea, I am not talking about the Vance & Hines or Cobra's but the ones that blow your ear drums... lol
