Major Headache...

My dealer and the MA Registry of Motorvehicles is killing me...

I "purchased" my stryker on Aug 17th. I couldn't get plates for it due to MA's requirement for proof of insurance. Your insurance company has to stamp a signed copy stating that your vehicle is in fact insured. Since I don't have a local branch for insurance we had to mail the forms to USAA/progressive. No big deal, takes a couple days and boom we're done. or so the story goes.

So I get a phone call from the dealer, the overnight shipment of my insurance form was delayed in transit so it'll be a few more days. Minor annoyance, but no biggie. A few days pass and I get another phone call earlier this evening...

Dealer: "So our runner when to get your plates and the RMV refused to issue your registration. They cannot confirm that you have paid sales tax on your trade-in and cannot issue plates since you did not pay sales tax on the full amount for the Stryker."

Me: "Ummm... ok. So I'm from Virginia where none of this insanity takes place. Can you elaborate more on what needs to be done?"

Dealer: "Well if you could e-mail or fax me a copy of your current virginia registration we should be good to go. Otherwise you'll owe a little over $300 in tax to satisfy the RMV."

Me: "You mean you'll owe a little over $300 in taxes."

Dealer: "Uh, I don't follow. You would have to pay the tax."

Me: "Actually, I signed the purchase for XXXX with tax included. It's not my mistake that you did not research the tax code regarding trades of vehicles purchased and registered out of state."

Dealer: "Well this won't be a problem, because we are going back to the RMV tomorrow with your registration which should satisfy the RMV. If not we will just have to talk from there."

Me : "I can send you a copy of my registration and a copy of the bill of sale from Britt Motorsports in Morehead City NC where I purchased and paid taxes on the vehicle. I took off work this Wed with the sole purpose of coming to your shop to pick up my bike and conclude our business. The bike will be plated and ready to go Wed morning."

Dealer: "We're doing our best to get you on your Stryker in a timely manner."

Me: "Where I'm from a timely manner is same day, next day at most. See you Wed. Please call me if you run into troubles tomorrow with the RMV. have a good evening."

Dealer: "You as well."

:frusty: :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

Please excuse what I'm about to say, any of you who are from MA or are attached to this state... but MA absolutely blows my mind as to how insanely difficult they make EVERYTHING. I HATE this state. The majority of my firearms I own... illegal in MA. Want to buy a car or bike? That's 6.25% tax and it'll be 3 or more days till you can drive away with it. Want to get a carry permit in MA? Sure, if you have the $$$... and despite the fact that your military training is far superior to any firearms "class" provided, you still have to take the classes. Oh but wait, if you aren't a resident of MA. Well then, depending on which town you live in / talk to the rules are different... so good luck figuring it out.

:bump: I just want to make sure you see this ryderjay.
Hey thanks for the link. I had that site pulled up last night lookin into it.

I know they have the bike, I gave it a good visual inspection before I started negotiating. I'm more worried there is a problem with the bike they are trying to fix or hide before I pick it up. But I don't want to jump to conclusions. Guess I will find out for sure tomorrow morning when I go out there. Either way I know I'm not paying a penny more for the bike.
Good luck...don't let them try to pull anymore ****. You have the information you need. If they still give you the runaround, just have them give YOU the RMV-1 form, and tell them you will get it registered.

Once again good luck, and I hope you get to ride it home :thumb: (then find another dealer to work with :))

Thanks, but once my bikes leave the dealer they never return to a dealer. Just never had this much trouble getting one off the lot before Iol

:thumb::thumb: Same here....unless it's something I really can't service myself (which I have never run into yet!) I'll rebuild my own motor before I bring it to a dealer. I'm sorry you have run into this much trouble. It really is not typical. The problems you have are reminiscent of registering a vehicle 30 years ago. That is simply NOT the case now-a-days. Let me know how it ends up...and then ride 100 mph down I-495 AWAY from that dealer!

Go Pats :thumb:

Like maybe the guy dropped it while detailing it or something :(.

For the life of me I can't see why they would be putting you through the ringer on this. It also sounds to me like the deal is already done and the bike is already paid for and yours so to come back later and ask for more money is just completely unacceptable.
I'm curious as well. I love in Washington State and your not even required by law to make motorcycle insurance here. Crazy state. Makes buying a bike easy tho

I live here as well (Wa) and I love the fact that you don't need Ins. or even an endorsement to buy it and ride it off the lot.
The dealership could care less.
I've been riding since I was 15 but never had an endorsement until about 3 weeks after I rode my Stryker home.
The dealer offered to have someone ride it home for me but NO-WAY.. It's my bike and my azz will be the only one to ever sit up front!
I didn't get insurance on it until 3 weeks after buying it and that was just a 10 minute phone call. (although I did not ride it until I had my endorsement and ins except for the ride home)
what every happend with this dealership?
They finally called me last tuesday to let me know everything was sorted out. I went there wed morning to pick up the bike. I gave it a good once over, only thing I found was a small gouge on the front right fork, but it's hardly noticeable. They certainly did not inspire any confidence in me during he purchase process, but in the end I got my Stryker. I won't be taking my bike there for service :D

Most of the issue was with how MA handles registrations.
Glad you got it sorted out. I've lived in MA. most of my life and have bought sold and traded many bikes and have never been asked for sales tax on a trade in. Strange. Enjoy your new ride!
I will never buy a vehicle in NJ ever again. Long story short, I came from CT, bought a truck in NJ, it was late, they gave me 30 day temp plates. 30 days come and go, I call them, WTF are my plates!? They overnight me another 30 day plate. They then tell me they cant register my truck until it goes through CT emissions. Um, is this your first time selling a car out of state!? So I go to emissions, pass, and fax them the paperwork. "Oh, we cant read it" So I do it again, they still cant read it. I put the ORIGINAL copy in a envelope and MAIL it to them, they still cant read it. At this point, my 2nd plate is about to expire. I explain nicely if I do not have my REAL plates by the expiration of this 2nd plate, I will be down there for my trade in back, and hand you the keys to the truck.... FIND my trade in NOW!

Yep, they called me the 2nd to last day, and said they had plates, and were overnighting them. I hate any and all DMVs

Man that sucks... usually the temp tags work out great. I loved the 30day tag system we had in VA. What truck did you buy?
