A coworker of mine is selling his 2007 Honda Shadow VT1100C2 because he’s go to get out from underneath the payment. He’s the original owner and it only has 10k on it. It’s all stock except for the Vance and Hines exhaust and the sissy bar that dealer installed when he bought it new. I’m seeing this bike advertised online in the $5,500-$6,000 range. He said he just wants payoff which is $3,000…I may pick it up and flip it for $5,000 or so. It runs down the road great but just recently the carb started leaking gas from the overflow tube so it doesn’t want to idle. Probably just needs a good cleaning because he let it sit for a bit. My old man's Yamaha 650 Special is out of commission right now so I'll probably let him ride it until it sales. I'd love to be able to just give him this one but I need the money.

Like I do with anything I've been doing my homework before I decide to make the purchase. I'm calling around to the different local dealerships asking how much they charge to go through the carbs on this bike. I'm noticing HUGE price differences between the local dealerships shop rates which reinforces my belief that you shouldn’t simply take one dealers word on something. One local dealer charges $400 + parts to do the job...while another reputable dealership only charges $179 + parts!!

I don't get it. If you can buy it for $3000 and sell it for $5000, then why doesn't the guy just sell it himself. He needs $3000 to pay it off. So why not even sell it for $4000 and pay it off and pocket $1000. I don't understand why you can see a flip, but he doesn't see it.

You and me both! This coworker is one of the most unique folks I've ever met and I've quit trying to find a rhyme and a reason for what he does. He does this with everything he buys...guns, kayaks, camping gear, dirt bikes ect. He always pays full price and then will sell the stuff for way cheap to a friend so he can finance his next venture. I guess he just doesn't want to bother with advertising it and trying to sell at market value. I never feel bad about buying stuff from him for cheap because he always names his price knowing what the stuff is really worth so it's not like I'm beating him down on the price. I've bought several guns off of him over the years and resold them for hundreds dollars in profit.

Just a little update: I picked up the bike over the weekend. I ended up paying $3,200 for it. I rode it directly to the local shop to have the carbs gone through since its puking gas out of the overflow tube. That’s going to run me $150. Once I get the bike back from the shop I’m going to clean and polish it up real nice…let my old man ride it for a couple of weeks before I try to sell it. My total investment should be $3,350 and I’m very confident that I can sell this bike on consignment and a local used bike dealer for a nice return on investment.
