I'm looking for a new seat. My lower back starts to get sore after about an hour of riding. I'm thinking either a Mustang Vintage Wide Touring Seat with Driver Backrest or Parts Unlimited Smooth 2 Up Predator Seat. Of course I'd be open to other suggestions. What do you guys think?

I guess, I haven't heard much about the parts unlimited seats. I like the price point. But, I think the versatility of the mustang seat would be worth the cost. Since I believe you can switch it between a 2 up and a single seat.

I prefer the Mustang, but I haven't actually bought one yet. I am not sure i'd get a rider backrest, but to with your back pain it looks like the way to go. A bit pricey however :(.

After putting 200 mi on the mustang, I can't get use to how much the seat changes the drivers position. I feel way to close to the tank. forward controls wouldn't change this fact. Also sitting up higher is a bit of a bother. My back felt great though. My butt got sore though. Didn't have that problem with the stock seat. talked to dennis kirk and I can return it. Now, parts unlimited or corbin?

Corbin, but not speaking from experience- speaking from want!

If you have a bad back it really doesn't matter what brand of seat you buy. The amount of padding under your ass doesn't matter. What you will need however, is a back support to place your spine in the proper position. Buy your seat based on what is available for your back. Don't go cheap. You should be looking at around $200 for the back support alone.

I've got the Parts Unlimited predator seat. It is very comfortable. I've ridden to Panama City, FL which was bout 400 miles each way and my butt never hurt. If you've never had a Corbin, you'll be surprised how hard the seats are. It takes a couple thousand miles to get it broke in.

I've got the corbin, and I wish I hadn't bought it. With the backrest, my back feels better, but the padding is absolutely terrible and my ass hurts all the time. Which never happened with the stock seat.. They say its supposed to break in over 2000 miles or so. I've put 3500 on it, and it's only slightly better than when I started.

For what its worth the Mustang seat takes a season of riding to break it in. Mine is a little stiff right now but I guy I know has one on his Boss Hoss and said after a year on it the seat is way more comfortable now. Just gotta get a good ass groove in it!

For the price of these seats they should already come with an ass groove.

Lemme clarify a little: I ride about 65 miles to work and 65 miles back every day. When I first got the corbin seat, it was literally painful within 15 minutes. Felt like siting directly on frame rails. So, I was freaking miserable going to work.

But hey, I was warned about this, right? Had to tough it out for 2k tops, it'll get better. Okay, so I've toughed it out. I've got 3500 miles in the seat now, and it did get better. Marginally. Now I'm merely severely uncomfortable but not actually in pain for two hours a day.

Mustang is on my list when the wallet is replenished from other recent mods!! :p
That is only from talking to several guys (including all the guys who ride at the bike shop), and they all pretty much said Mustang.

You've been more paitent than I would've...if I were in your shoes I'd order a Mustang (or some other highly reccomended seat) and try it out. You can probably recover a good chunk of the money you put into the Corbin provided its in good shape.

On my last bike (VTX 1300C) I got the Mustang and within a week ordered an Ultimate X seat b/c I wasn't happy and felt like for my money it should be more comfortable. After trying both seats out I ended up loving the Ultimate seat and sold the Mustang seat to a forum member.

Not every seat will be the answer for everyone--I love my new Mustang (had it less than a week) but there are some folks who didn't care for it at all.

We put a Saddlemen Explorer Special one piece on my wife's 950. It solved the problem of the spot that put pressure on your tailbone, and it did that to my little butt also. But it too is a bit stiff and I don't think it will ever get much softer even though it has jell padding in it. It is really cushy on bumps though.
To me and my wife the stock Srtyker seat is very comfortable. But after an hr or more of riding it too gets a bit uncomfortable on your back. But I do not think that the seat is the problem. And here is why, I put two sleeping bags in a duffel bag and strapped it to my back seat and rode out a tank of gas/3hrs of riding and filled up and rode another 2 hrs and had no back issues at all. So it's a mater of back support no seating position that is the problem.
I wouldn't recommend spending $400+ on something that doesn't support your back more than what you already have. The Saddlemen seat we got actually has more back support than the stock. It also is separated from the back so you sink down when you set in it and the back doesn't move like on traditional one piece seats Here is a pic. We plan on redoing her stock seat our self when we get back from our 2,000 mile ride.

But seriously,

Thanks for all the info everyone!

The mustang just isn't doing it for me. I know there's usually a break in period. But, how much it pushes me towards my tank and the rise. It just doesn't feel as comfortable. I don't feel like I'm riding the same bike anymore. If the stock seat had a back rest option I'd be on it. I think I'm going to try the Parts unlimited. I can get it from dennis kirk tomorrow. If I don't like it. On to another. I'm thinking the solo seat now. Then taking my stock seat to someone to get beefed up as a comfortable 2up.
