So I have been riding around on my motorcycle permit the last few months. Some 23 years ago was the last time I rode a bike up until January of this year when I bought a Suzuki M50 and then in February I bought my Stryker. So I decided to sign up for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. This class was great and alot of fun bringing some new stuff I never knew to the table and refreshing what I used to know. While I had to endure riding a Suzuki GZX 250 for 2 days which isn't the most comfortable thing to ride at 6'3" and 280 pounds it made me realise how much I needed to practice certain things. Almost anyone can ride in a straight line, these guys put us through some really good scenarios and cornering test. In the end my confidence and skills definately improved and I walked away with a waiver for my license! ;D I would recommend a course like this to new and old riders. If anything it puts you to the test in what you know.

Did the same thing here in Illinois last fall and I'm with you on the 250cc bikes. That said, I'm really glad I did it too and recommend it to anyone whose been away from bikes for a while. A great refresher and you don't have to take the state test if you pass.

I too use to ride over 20 years ago and then 2 years ago went to the Illinois motorcycle training class. It was a great refresher on skills that I hadn't used in years. Definitely something everyone should do.

My bro-in-law took the class and said even with riding many years, moved from different state, he learned new things and other stuff was a good refresher. Also learning new things are a lot easier on a 250 than a 1300 or bigger. This spring or summer my lil bro n I are gonna do it.

In my opinion they should make this class mandatory in NY. I have attended many bike nights and as i walked around and over hearing people talk i was amazed at how many people are riding around on just a permit, mostly the young crowd on sport bikes some older people too. In SC you are aloud to ride on your permit alone so they have no reason to get a full lisence.

It should be mandatory everywhere. Lots of young people riding around in IL without a permit or license, mostly on sport bikes. In IL you cannot ride alone and you cannot ride after dark on your permit.

I'm in SC, and they are a little lax with the permits around here. I've ridden bikes here for several years, all on a permit (just go in, give them a couple bucks, and it's renewed). You are not supposed to ride after dark here, unless you are with a guardian. Since I'm 44, I figure that's guardian enough.
