O2 sensor? What if we just unplug it for the lean issues?

First post here...had been running drilled stock pipes but just added V&H twin slash pipes and have a ejk tuner on the way. I put the pipes on and took it for a spin with the o2 sensor unplugged since I don't have the fuel programmer yet. I assume the ecu will default to a richer setting similar to the resistor mod for the o2 sensor...Or will it be too rich all over the rpm range? The test ride was only a few miles but seemed to run smoother with less chugging at low rpms in 1st/2nd gear and backfires on decel were not very bad at all. So just a thought for the stock owners looking to do the resistor mod...maybe just unplug it all together. Please chime in if this has been done, but my search turned up nothing. Maybe it will suck gas like crazy, but don't think so. I didn't ride the bike any more yet and will be a moot point when I get the controller as I have read the o2 sensor gets unplugged anyway.

I agree with Stryker2012, There is a learning curve associated clutching and throttle with this bike. It annoyed me at first but I soon learned that I love the quick throttle response on the bike and the fact that the bike loves to run in the higher rpm range (Almost like a power band). I rap the throttle before downshifting, I power shift at a higher rpm and I feather the throttle back open when at lower rpm. Drive the bike hard and you will love it. The problems of chugging are amplified by going to larger rear tire but you can adjust accordingly. 02 Sensor does nothing for me because I ride aggressively and rap throttle at redlights etc. Just my 2 cents. I have never ridden a 1300 that will light em up like this one will.
Just to add my $.02, after installing my Cobra Swept exhaust I had terrible low RPM issues like so many others. Unplugged the O2 sensor and the bike is far far better than with it plugged in. Leaving it unplugged despite any mileage issues it might cause.
ahh he.ll, i just had to plug my 02 sensor back in (with inline resistor).... i think my bike is bipolar... one day it runs better with it unplugged... the next it doesn't...

it's been running rough at idle... wanting to die on me... then in almost every gear 1-4, while holding the throttle steady.. (cruising).. its been doing that **** hiccuping/ surging crap...

So, I replaced the exhaust gaskets... and it's still doing it... so I just plugged the sensor back in.. and now it runs better.. (bipolar) except in 2nd gear @32-35 speedo mph..

go figure... I am definitely getting a PCV this spring & having it tuned! tired of this crap!
We're having the exact same convo in two threads now, THAT... or I'm having a flashback...:suspicious::nod::D

I'm having the same experience as you. Had surging with o2 plugged in at about 18mph 1st gear and 32mph 2nd gear. I unplugged o2 and things were great for a couple of rides. Now it's back to surging and sounding like it's going to stall at red lights.
I also have the transistor from flpsmlps20, and have tried it both with o2 plugged and unplugged. Seriously frustrating me. I'm going to check belt tension tomorrow, and already have adjusted throttle and clutch freeplay.

I'm running a drilled stock exhaust, Cobra autotuner, and Cobra intake. I have Cobra Swepts on the way, but not sure that's going to make much difference for the surging.
Classic Adrenaline, LMAO

Hey Bush....I'd love to get together with you and see what this surging is everyone complains about. I guess I'm lucky and don't have this problem. I'm in Palmer, couple of towns over from Worcester. Maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle one day????

Try unplugging the auto tuner and the O2. I have only done the exhaust and unplugged O2 with no problems. Been done for a while now.
Mine ran like crap with o2 sensor plugged in. Would die at stop signs or idle real low and almost die, chugged a lot at low rpm's with stock pipe and intake. Now with ejk kit and twin slash pipes and power flo intake....idle seems a bit faster and very stable, never dies, runs awesome with chugging nearly eliminated. FWIW...

Good job sir!

I'd love to meet up but this time of year, between my kids and my business, I generally don't get to ride for more than an hour or so. And yeah, you're lucky you don't have to deal with the surging!

That's on the list after belt adjustment and oil change.
I went from stock with drilled pipes to resistor and now unplugged. Still have what I would call a minor stutter at cruise in the 40-70 kph range(18-45 mph).

I had the same stutter... I called it a "sneeze" at highway speed.
That was dangerous for me once on a freeway off ramp... Hard turn, speed, suddenly I lost power for a split second and started going down.
Scared the bejeezus out of me but I have since replaced the exhaust gaskets and that has never happened again.
It had nothing to do with the O2 mod, not modded, unplugged, plugged... What ever.
Stuttering at speed, for me, was solved by replacing my exhaust gaskets and using some extreme hi-temp gasket sealer on the mating surfaces.

I only had about 10 miles or so on the original exhaust gaskets before I added my Cobra swept pipes so I thought I could get away with reusing the original gaskets... WRONG...
They are crush gaskets, only good for one use.
The way I see it, Your valves are right there, next to your exhaust connection and if there is a leak, no matter how small then your valves can suck in cold air on the back stroke. The engine doesn't like that and it reacts with a misfire causing the stutter.

Anyway, It worked for my case.
I now have a couple thousand miles on it without adjusting anything and it runs flawless. Never a cough, hiccup, stutter, sneeze... Nothing.
Only a slight decel pop but THAT is normal for a good running V-Twin.

removal of 02 sensor

Just in case you all are still around....so what are the possible negative effects to the bike if I just disconnect the 02 sensor?

Thanks!!

If you do that it will trigger a homing signal to homeland security and you will be shot on site! Or the computer will produce an error code "check engine light". run like chit. try it you will see.

I had mine unplugged for three days and it never tripped a CEL...of course those rides were >10 miles so that may be a factor.
Won't affect a dayum thing.

But you will still get shot
Mines been unplugged for 1400 miles, no problems. I have LOTS of popping on decel, but it did that before I unplugged the O2 sensor. Now if the little lady wasn't so hellbent on getting married in September, I would have gotten Ivan's flash by now!
Priorities Man! Priorities!!
