The manual recommends to replace the oil every 4K miles and the filter every 8K. I know the quality of products these days are superior to what was on the market 10-15 years ago, but I am still of the mindset that you should change the filter everytime you change the oil.

Please weigh in with your thoughts. Feedback from the mechanics on this sight is greatly appreciated.

I just change it every time...it's cheap insurance. I use the WalMart SuperTech ST7317...$2 and it works great!

My dealer offered a pre-pay on oil changes when I bought my bike (included in my financing). It includes oil and filter every 2k miles for three years. Basically I paid for the first three each year and any extra are just bonus for me. They also check over the whole bike and wash it for me every time I bring it in! I guess to answer your question, this offer was their way of recommending both oil and filter every 2k.

hmmm that doesn't really sound like a very good deal at all. If I understand you correctly you're paying the dealer’s inflated prices to change the oil twice as often as the manufacturer recommends?! Even if you get free washes and an extra one or two changes a year for "free" you're still getting the raw end of the deal.

When you think of it that way, yeah it's kind of a rip off. The way I see it though, is that I've always done oil and filter on everything I've owned more often than recommended. This way I can bring the bike in, let them do all the dirty work, and know that the entire bike is checked over every 2k miles. In the long run yeah it might cost a little more, but since it's included in my loan, it only costs me $18 more per month for the peace of mind. Plus I get to sit there and b.s. with the guys that work there, and test ride random bikes just for the heck of it... To me it's worth it.

I believe you should always change the filter with the oil change. I think I am old fashion also. In addition to the dealership oil change topic, I took my bike in to the dealership for my first service because they said they do a 72 point inspection so it is not just a service. I agree to it and the result is; I now have two screws on the bottom of the bike which I wiped down last night because they appeared to have excess gunk on them. I couldn't stop thinking of it so I went to check on it this morning and sure enough I have fresh oil coating the screws again. So I called the dealership and they told me that the washers must have gone bad. Now, what I don't understand is why the heck do I have washers going bad 1st of all the bike only has 1600 miles and 2nd the bike had a 72 point inspection 1000 miles ago. I am dumb founded as to why this is happening!!! So result is, I will be doing all my services from now on!

I saw that in the manual also but will be changing the filter every oil change. Depending on which type of oil you run, the oil can sometimes outlast your filter. I use Blackstone labs to verify longevity of oil with synthetics but I haven't found an accurate way to find out how long a filter can last so for the cost I just replace them. I use a K&P filter on my Vic which is reusable so I wash it every oil change but I'm not sure if they offer it for this bike.

I change my oil and filter at the same time, always have, always will. But I have the same problem with a little oil leaking from my bike as well. Leaving a little stain on the garage floor. Gonna have to give a good once over.

Changing the oil and not the filter seems akin to taking a shower and putting dirty clothes back on. If I'm going through the trouble of changing the oil there's no reason not to change both.

I Used Yamahalube 20-50 but now use Maxima Semi 20-50 i try to change the oil every 4,000mi with filter...... Sometimes go over but it doesnt hurt the bike if u go just a lil over...... Ill never use Walmart brand cuz i personally think the company sux with the way they do business n all but thats just me.... I change my own oil and pretty much do everything myself...... Im not a mechanic by all means but im not retarded either lol I can handle mine if u know what i mean..... I have over 16,000mi on my ride since i got it in March 2011 and slowed down my ridin for a month but now back on the saddle!!! I would recommend buying a "Magnetic Oil Pan Drain Bolt" so it catches loose metal shavings that u can dispose of when changing ur oil!!!

I've said it probably hundreds of times in my life," If a mechanic shop doesn't have a open shop policy don't let them wort on you vehicle unless you are prepared to take it bake and make them do it right." Because sooner or later they will screw something up even as simple as changing the oil. Any good honest mechanic will let you watch, even at the Yamaha dealer they let me watch. There is no such thing as a washer wearing out after the 3rd or 4th oil change. Changing the oil and filter is so easy do it your self. I change mine as close to 3,000 miles as possible. And I always change the filter when changing the oil. They are only $2.00 to $12.00 and like someone here said after you take a bath/clean your rear end would you put your dirty shorts back on?

hahaha Toby, one of the guys tagging along for our Atlanta to Vegas trip said he was only packing one change of clothes for the ride, guess he'll be wearing dirty shorts at least 2 days
