Went on my first poker run this past Saturday. My baby brother is 43 and a diabetic. He has had amputations on both his feet and has stage 4 renal failure and is on dialysis but is on a kidney transplant list. A friend of his from church organized a bike run in order to raise money for him and his wife (who is a 5 year cancer survivor and counting) to help pay for medical bills.
He has a Harley which he is not able to ride much anymore and all his friends have Harley's. So - you guessed it - out of the 50+ bikes on Saturday I was the only non H.D. That being said we had a great time. I had a lot of riders (most of whom I did not know/had never met) come up and ask about my bike. Some thought it was a Harley - others (to my surprise) actually said they had done a lot of reading about it. All commented on how great it looked and how "mean" it sounded (Cobra down swept exhaust). A lot of the guys kept switching positions so they could ride next to me for a bit. It was kinda surreal!
I work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber and they along with a lot of other local companies) donated prizes for an auction that was held after the ride.
We had a great time and raised over 3K for my brother. And (please don't tell him!!) one of the coolest things was all the compliments my bike got.
Bottom line - there are a lot of great riders out there regardless of what they ride....! And if you have someone close to you that is able to go out (whether it's bike riding or what ever) please take the time to slow down from your busy life and do it today. You may not get the chance tomorrow.......
Ride safe!
