I recently replaced the stock rear with a Metzler 240 and it got me thinking about going dark side. Just looking for input from anyone who has or does ride dark side. I know the fight against doing it, but really haven't had the chance to hear from someone who has personal experience running car tires.

Oh ok i gotcha. I'm familiar with the car tire stuff i just didn't connect the dots there on the term "darkside".

Wow. Car tire? Aren't they engineered to run perpendicular to the road, i. e, not lean due to their shape and intension? The sheer-load test they do is different than that of a genuine motorcycle tire, so I'm curious how it is perceived to perform. Aesthetically I see the desire, but functionally it doesn't seem like a good fit. Not trying to stir things up, but I am genuinely interested in the mechanics of it.

From my understanding you run the car tire at a lower tire pressure in order to allow for more give on the edge. Using a performance oriented tire with a little more of a soft chine (kayak term don't know tire term). When running streight lines it gives much more contact with the road then a motorcycle tire will, and hence perform better under certain conditions (rain), and on edge you will get virtually the same size contact patch that a standard motorcycle tire rides on.

I couldn't get the second video to play for me tonight, but have watched it in the past.

Im confused by this lol..... heres my 2 cnts...... car tires are for "Cars" theirs reasons why their not motorcycle tires and motorcycle tires are not for cars..... i understand you see very few that have dont this mod but have you ever heard a car put on motorcycle tires?? and for what reason would one put a bike tire on a car??? lol their are some things that you can use or add to a bike thats from a car maybe but for safety reasons i would never put on a [] Car tire on a bike, thats just stupid...... you may be able to turn with it but i bet if you go toe to toe with someone with the same ride but different tires car tire vs bike tire the car tire will get dealt with lol

I've done a bit of research on this, as I've considered doing it. I did it on my Honda for a bit. I know there are a few guys 'round these parts riding dark side, and more on raiders. My problem is, since its a new bike there's not really a lot of experience to pull from when chosing a tire, and picking a bad fit bit me when I was going darkside on my Shadow.

The pros: It works well. In most "cruising" situations, a car tire will usually perform better than a motorcycle tire. More traction in the rain. They last more than twice as long. They're cheaper. For me, burning through two or three back tires a year on just the Stryker, not including my other two bikes, it seems like a no brainer.

It's hard to get a bead on the real cons, since most of the downsides I see are from people just shooting from the hip because they don't like the idea.

BTW, from what I've read people usually run a little bit higher pressure in CTs. Like 38-42psi. But it depends on the tire.

And, WLFPAK, motorcycle tires on cars are actually pretty popular in some circles 8)

Just read this. I don't really know to much about the topic. But what I do know is the only thing I value most on my bike are my tires. It's just not a mod I'd be wiling to risk.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with this.
Read the article and liked it a lot. Didn't even think of the insurance/liability aspect of this. that's alone has now made me 100% against going dark side. However, I still haven't heard a suitable argument pro or con from someone with direct experience. I have been kayaking for 20 years and safely do things (like launch off of 40fot cliffs) that all instructors and 99% of kayakers will tell you never to do. I understand what it is like to be in the fringe of a group which is why I'm still looking for a darksiders input.

I know of a couple of darksiders that got it in writing from their insurance companies that the tire change would not effect their coverage. It's up to you to contact your insurance company and find out what their policy is. If you want to hear from people with direct experience, try http://mcdarksiders.forumotion.com/ or pm one of the members here. szabla or somesuch. Someone already linked to his thread.

edit: You know what, that whole article seems to be BS. There are some good rebuttals in the comments that are consistant with what I know.
