Re: blacking out speedo rim, etc

This question may have been addressed in the past, but I did not find any info on the matter. For those of you who have blacked out their headlight housing and speedo casing, I am thinking of using the spray version of the plast-dip in matte black. Is this a good choice, or is there a better paint to be used? I would prefer not to damage or scratch the finish just in case I do not like the results. And has anyone painted over the tank "chrome" strip? Thank you!!! :)

I didn't scratch up any of the chrome. Just used adhesion promoter, then my black paint. Tank chrome strip have seen some painted, but some have just removed it and went with a chrome ring. Which can be painted also.

Re: blacking out speedo rim, etc

I have mine stripped of chrome along with the key housing. I am going to have my painter paint them black just for a harder paint. But as you want to do it, there is nothing more than cleaning real good with some mineral spirits, let dry and two or three light coats. You will be happy with the results. Let the plasti-dip 24 hours before handling. I saw some finger prints in that covering because I didn't let it dry the required time plus some.

I used a plastic adhering paint that turned out not to be necessary (and didn't work well) because of the chrome coating. On the right side of the bike my boot rubbed a bunch of it off the cover after only 2 short rides. As long as nothing comes in contact with the spray paint it holds up well, but that's not practical on a bike that you actually ride. I will be using the plasti-dip spray to correct the problem.
