Bump....

I'd like to bring this thread back to life, I'm getting ready to replace my stock tire for the first time. I've been hearing that the Avon 240 is the way to go. My bike is completely sock, I'd like to stay that way for now, so which of these tires will work with absolutely no mods. Btw I'm about 275 lbs and often ride 2 up with my wife, who weighs 160. I don't think I'm interested in a 250 right now.

2nd, if anyone could recommend a good website to buy the tire I need, I would appreciate it.

3rd, how likely is it that I will find a dealer with the tire in stock?

4th, what should I expect to pay my yammy dealer to install the tire.....will they charge more if I don't buy it from them?

Thanks

Amazon has the avon cobra 240/40/18 for sale right now for $206.00 free shipping.
If you put a 240 on your bike, you will have to modify the belt guard a little, Toby had to shave his so the tire wouldn't rub ... not a huge deal but you should check that.
Lucky you are that you don't have to lower the bike in order to put a 240 on it LOL my legs are too short so I have to lower it an inch before I can make that change =)
I would suggest caution when first riding 2 up with the 240, take it easy on the bumps n stuff. Even with the bike not lowered you will rub the tire on the inside of the fender.
OH the metzler 240 is listed in the XXL line... not their usual ME-880... that is where you find the 210...
if you go with the avon, keep us posted on what kind of mileage you get on it, specially with the 2 up riding =)

I really like my avon 240. Came on the bike when I bought it. I can't speak to the longevity of the tire but I've had the bike for a year and put 3k miles on it. Not sure how many miles were on the tire before I bought the bike but it still looks pretty darn good.

P.S. I don't ride 2 up but I'm 300lbs myself.

Thanks,

Was the lower belt guard modified on your bike when you bought it? Several people say no mods are requirred, others say stuff has to be cut. Ever had any trouble rubbing the tire on the fender on big bumps?

yes either one of those will go on, Toby has used the Metzler on his bike, the avon is the brand we haven't tried yet.
That will be the next one we try. Just waiting on my lowering kit to get here so my feet can still reach the ground once it is on my bike LOL

A little bit of a drive for you but...
I called I-90 Motorsports (Issaquah) and told Remko what I could get the ME880 for online and he matched it.
Mounted and balanced on the wheel was $250.
In hindsight, I wish I would have paid more for THEM to also install it.
BTW... They are a REAL dealer with guys who ride and know their stuff.
They also have a dyno and a tech who is proficient with it.

I tried to do that out here, show my local trusted shop what I could get tires for, hoping they would match the price so I could just buy the tire thru them and have it mounted, balanced and installed.
I guess dealers and shops out here are just not interested in doing business that way. I usually wind up ordering our tires myself then taking them and the bikes in to Mark to have the tires put on. Toby is determined to get the tools and setup so we can just start doing our tires ourselves... we have been doing 80% of the rest of the maintenance ourselves, he figures why not 100% and I agree with him if he is willing to do all the fiddly stuff like valve adjustments ;)
Anyone have a suggestion on the best bike jack, and tire changing tools to shop for?

Thanks, is Remko a forum member or the owner of the shop. Issaquah is about 100 miles. My only per choice is probably Rainier Honda Yamaha in Spanaway, and it doesn't look like the greatest shop. But im not a fan of city traffic. i guess thats why i live in the mountains :) We will C I guess. Did I-90 motorsports stock any of these tires?

Btw...I see you have the Metz 240. How do you like it? Did you have to modify anything to get it to fit? Does it ever rub the fender over bumps?

Awesome, thanks Joe! I think we can get the portable tire changer right away, seems a very good price right now... the lift will have to wait but I stuck it on the wish list.
Harbor Freight seems to have really good prices.
