With training wheels I will be able to govern it down to 5 mph if I want. I have two acres of grassy flat land for my backyard. He's fallen off his bicycle going faster than that in our driveway. Plus he will be wearing a helmet, gloves, and riding boots EVERY time he gets on it.

My little brother started out on a PW50 back in the day. Great little bike. Took lots of abuse and I dont think we ever did any maintenance and once he got use to it we were able to make it a bit faster so it lasted awhile.

My son rode a bicycle w/o training wheels at 2yrs and 9 months. We got him a honda crf50 when he turned 5. It has 3 gears so in the begining we just left it in first gear. When he got used to it I would leave it in second. The bike has enough grunt to start even in second. I would suggest not cheaping out because in 2 yrs he will need something bigger and the Yam/ Hondas hold value well. We bought it new for 1000.00 and I sold it to my best friend for his kid 2 yrs later for $650. He now has the crf 70 (he is 8). Next christmas we will probably get something with a clutch. I even rode the 50 myself. Its first gear is low enough to pull stumps out. Top end was 30mph even with me. I kinda miss that bike you could almost as easily carry it as you could ride it.

Second with staying with a name brand, I strayed with the kids to an off brand and regreted it with resale. They grow really fast!! I'd pick up a clean used bike, they just don't wear them out and plastic is cheap if you want it to look new. Also four stroke is really easy to deal with for a beginner and less work for you.

Man I think it's awesome you guys are putting your kids on bikes so early, I had my 1st bike at 4 and it was great growing up on bikes, really will give your kids a feeling of accomplishment when the trainers come off

Took my son to the dealership to size a helmet for him. He saw the ttr and ran straight to it. Guess I picked the right one. When we got home he ran to the garage and asked, "Where my motorcycle?". He was pissed when he realized I didn't buy it. Can't wait to see his face xmas morning.

I'm looking to buy my three year old a 50cc dirt bike for Xmas. I'm eyeing the yamaha pw50 bc it is one gear and has a governor.

Any other recommendations?
Kids dirt bike can be a great way to teach your child how to ride and is perfect for children who are 3 years old. There are several types of dirt bikes that come in different sizes, but the Honda CRF50R is one of the best because it has great safety features like front and rear brakes, a thumb throttle and an easy-to-use kick start.
There are many other options as well. For example, kids can also learn how to ride on BMX bikes if they have friends with them when riding their dirt bikes.
In order to find out which type of dirt bike you should buy for your child I would suggest visiting any local motorcycle shop or going online and doing some research.
Once you have decided on what type of dirt bike you want, then it's time to get shopping! You can go online and order from Amazon or Ebay as well as local stores where you live in order to save money! If you do decide to go with a used bike then make sure that there isn't anything wrong with it before buying it so that your child doesn't end up having problems later on down the road!
I hope this helps answer your question!

You do, of course, realize that said boy is now 13.
