There are an easy 10 threads on this. Just yank it off carefully. 2-sided tape only holds it on. Don't be surprised if you see a tank seam under it though.

How do I remove the chrome plastic piece around my gas cap?
Is it glued on or something? I want to take it off and possibly leave it off all together, and if not at least paint it black if I must have it on there.

Don't fret it friend! the search option on this forum is from the dark ages. It won't look for 3 letter words or less( cap, gas) . How ridiculous is that.Sorry I looked but I guess not hard enough. I will look better next time before posting.....
