With the help of Roger on this board I removed the dust cover on the rear disc. Only took about 30 min to complete and very easy. All you need is a dremel tool, 1 1/2 inch metal cutting disc and some wooden wedges. You will also need six washers to put on the screws you remove before putting them back on after removing the dust cover. I will explain the procedure on each picture. Maybe this will be helpful to others like me that need a little help. Actually I usually need a LOT of help. The first picture is before anything is done.

You will need to rotate tire as you do this, remove 4 of the screws leaving 2 opposite of each other screwed out enough to get wooden wedges between the dust cover and the brake disc. These screws also hold on the disc brake. That is why you do not want to take them all off at the same time.

Take two wedges and place them between the dust cover and the disc brake. This will keep them far enough apart to make sure you can cut the dust cover without doing any damage to the disc. I also layed a towel over the swing arm and exhaust so I would not scratch up anything while I was using the dremel.

Just be careful when cutting and where eye protection. I was surprised how about how much metal dust covered everything, espicially since mine is Raven. After the first cut you might have to screw the screw back in to rotate the tire or is will catch either on the swing arm or brake pad. Just cut slowly, I overheated my poor little dremel by trying to go to fast. After the second cut you can rotate the cover and start putting a couple of screws back in. I just used a regular washer to take the place of the depth of the disc. I also used some blue lok tight on each one. Just continue until you get all the screws back in.

Everything back together, looks so much better. Hope this will help anyone that does this and once again Thanks Roger for helping me do mine. Just paying forward.

Interesting write up. Though for the sake of ease, I think pulling the rear wheel would take half the time and mess over cutting off the dust cover. But... Whatever gets the job done, I guess LOL

Yes. Not to mention you save the part. I had mine off once, but I didn't have the washers on hand so I put it back until next time I change a tire..

That is true but I have no intention of putting it back on, and yes Schimbo black would look good. I just do not have the skill to take the tire off and put it back on...way above my skill level.

taking the rear wheel off is a pain in the arse....getting the caliper bracket
to slide in along with all the other hardware....Id rather cut it......and that is
what I did.....just more options out there.

All right has any one determined what this plate is for. I'm sure it serves a purpose and Yamaha did not just put it on to add more weight or for looks. Has anyone ever asked a Yamaha Tec. I know next time I'm at my dealer I'm goning to ask.

According to the manual, it's just a rear disc cover. ;)
