We will be moving into our newly constructed facility next summer. Soon the parking painting contract will be sent out and I would like a designated motorcycle parking area. We can have upwards of 6-12 cycles at our facility and currently we jump the curb and park in an overhang for the shade. We won't get that luxury at this facility. My first goal is to secure a dedicated spot and then when we move I will finance an awning or cover for that area. Baby steps.

My second level manager has no issues and is for it. The other section management asked me why I need dedicated parking. I gave him a few whys and he seemed to be staring through me. Why he cares I have no idea but I need just a bit more ammo for my letter/request. If you have some good bullets I would be most grateful.

If they really think about it they'll realize that motorcycles are more environmentally friendly so there's that benefit. Also they will create less congestion (6 bikes in 2 spaces = 4 less spaces needed for cars. Also by dedicating a couple of spaces for motorcycles it will prevent riders from parking illegally on sidewalks and loading zones. Employees want to know their motorcycles are safe while they work. Since bikes are prone to tipping over, special attention should be paid to the slope and surface of the parking space which should be as close to flat as can be attained while still providing adequate drainage. Since the kickstand supports a lot of weight in a small area, it can sink into heated asphalt, causing bikes to fall and pavement to become riddled with dents and holes. For these reasons, concrete, brick, concrete or stone pavers, or a densely packed fine stone dust work best. The spaces should be grouped together, as opposed to spread throughout a lot, out of the path of other vehicles that could bump them when backing up, keeping clear of overhanging trees to prevent bird droppings or dripping sap. Because 2-3 people could lift a lighter motorcycles into a van or truck, theft is a concern. Position parking spaces in a high traffic area to assure plenty of visibility, and within view of security cameras, if available. Clearly direct riders with signage to the designated parking.

Hope this helps.

Yah, what he said. Pretty much sums it up.

I would add that drivers often find it fustrating and can cause confusion when there are many cars looking for a space when a driver attempts to pull into a space that appears empty only to abandon thier turn halfway into the space when they discover a bike is taking the entire spot because it could not seen by the cars on eithier side. The other cage drivers would actually appreciate having a dedicated area for this reason. They can always assume if a spot appears open it is open, otherwise it just add a general and uncessary fustration toward the MC riders especially if the employee is running late and trying to quickly find a parking space.

The heat of the day is extream and directed to the gas tank, where a cars gas tank is procted by layes of steel the bikes only has one, and gas expands, so with the right amount of heat and a dumb **** with a cigerett acidents happen. thats my best shot. 8)

I'm going to guess that given his reaction to your request, and not being a motorcycle enthusiant, he'll likely not care about most of the above statements. But as a manager he will care about safety compliance issues and parking standards.

Like with what Skeerlee said, a designated space will keep vehicles off of pedestrian walk ways and the likely oil spots that are fall hazards to employees.

It will alleviate parking congestion and ensure employees can arrive for work on time.

Increased employee satisfaction.

That's all I got.
