I put the quick release on mine. It seems to work very well, but haven't really gone on any extended rides with a passenger yet. The quick release was a must for me so that I can put it on and take it off in seconds. I don't really like the look of backrests on bikes, so I only use it when I am hauling somebody.

I have the short fixed mount and my girlfriend and daughter have both said its comfortable. It looks pretty slick for a backrest ;)
About how long does it take to install and remove the fixed mount backrest? Quite a bit cheaper than the quick release but I may have to suck it up and get the QR if it is a big hassle.

It's only 4 bolts. Loosen all bolts, remove two rear bolts, remove spacers or leave them there and install bolts or remove spacers and install original bolts. Same for front bolts.
IMHO I would say all of 20 min.

Thinking of the short backrest for mine, but read somewhere that it is difficult to remove the seat when it is on and I would have to remove it to use the helmet lock. Is it a problem or was someone exaggerating?

I got the quick release tall one also but hate how it looks without the backrest attached to the bike.... the bolts sticks out like a muther!!!
I agree 100%. I had my quick release bolts powder coated black so they weren't as bad of an eye sore. Problem is when you pull the back rest off the powder coat has chipped due to the metal on metal contact. I cover it with touch up paint. All that said I am still happy with it.

Short fixed mount took all of 15 minutes to install with saddle bag brackets included. And I like that look because it maintains the contour of the bike. The tall one looks out of place on the Sryker. My wife says it's plenty comfortable. We have a tall one on her V Star and it looks fine on that stile of bike. No problem removing the seat at all. And for the kind of long rides we do two up we pack a lot of gear including a tent and air mattress and sleeping bags which extend up past the top of the back pad and give much more support. But a QR would be great for those of you who wont to keep it and an extra helmet in you saddle bags in case you want to pick up that pretty or handsome hitch hiker; lol
