Is there a difference in sound between a slip on and a full exhaust system? The slip on is clearly cheaper and I am not overly concerned about more horse power. Does the full exhaust sound the same as a slip on from the same manufacturer?

Thanks

In my experience full exhaust and slip ons do have different sounds. I prefer the sound of a full system over the slip ons. A guy a ride with has a road star with a cobra (i think) slip on, and it sounds good, but not GREAT. Try a youtube search for the different exhaust systems and slip ons. There are a bunch out there of Strykers, and while it sounds diff in real person, it will give you an idea.

I have the V&H twin slash and LOVE them. Loud, but not too loud at cruising speed.

Personally I was blown away by the sound of the Cobra slip-on. Have heard drilled stock, Cobra swepts and V&H twin slash in person to compare.

Verses drilled, much lower/meaner but mine does decel pop frequently and it's noticeable verses the drilled stock popping
Verses V&H not nearly as loud but I find those a little too loud(guess I'm getting old because if it's too loud...)
Verses Cobra Swepts; toss up right now. Have to meet up with Patrice to see/hear again and refresh my aging mind. As for looks, yea the swepts have it beat there pretty easy but I'm "trying" to keep the mod cost down as best I can... Too many toys and projects at the moment to be spending extra cash on basically a 6 month distraction :)

As others have said get what you like. In the end you'll end up there anyway and if you compromise first you're looking at adding close to $250 to the final tab... Wait a little, meet up with some people in the area and if possible take a ride on their bike to really know. Waiting a little will save you cash and ensure that you get what you want.
BTW, personally I think even a full pipe install is within the wrenching ability of most everyone. Full pipes take 2 people but that's what beer and friends are for!!
Plus what better way to get one of your buddies hooked on the "Hobby"...

Billys got it right. Now I shortened my slip-on and it is now even louder than my Son;s Stryker with V&H big radius 2 into 2. By the way he agrees and wants his to be louder than mine LOL.

Thanks Billy for the feedback. I love the look of the full exhaust of both the VH and Cobra but can't justify the cost either and have been considering the slip on. $700 vs $200. For the price difference I could get the Corbin seat my ass is so desperately crying for.

Did not want to start a new for this question but for those who did the Cobra slip-on did you have find you needed to loosen the front exhaust acorn nuts as described in the instructions? I can't see how to loosen the very front nut without removing the radiator to get a socket wrench or extension in there. I just question if it is really necessary.

I don't think you should have to loosen any of the acorn nuts for the slip-on... I don't have the Cobra slip-on my self, but I have had my exhaust completely apart and I do have a different slip-on mounted. I find it weird that they would even put that in the instructions.

That said, when I pulled my exhaust off, I just used a open-end/box wrench to remove the front nuts.

I think they had that in there to make the various bolts removed/installed a little easier.

Actually I think one of the hardest parts was getting the silly Cobra heat shield on since I lowered my passenger pegs!!
As long as you have a decent set of tools and take your time this is an easy job.
Total install was 30 minutes including putting tools away.

NOTE: Just my advice but take the time to put and old bath towel on various parts of the bike and something on the ground as well. Things have a way of falling/slipping if you don't and then you are continually reminded of that by the scratch etc. they leave behind. In other words: Cheap Insurance :)

I was one of the unlucky ones and had to loosen pipes at cylinders when I installed my Slip-on. Was off about 1/2" before I did. Was not that hard to do though. Just have to recheck the torque about half dozen times after a ride in between each check.

Didn't make sense to me eithier but figured they put it in the instructions for a reason I cannot understand unless it was to better align the 2-1 heat sheild. Thanks guys.

I had a full cobra exhaust on my last bike, sound was nice and it was loud. I go on a lot of long distance rides and didnt want to listen to the overbearing noise for 8 hours straight. Bought the slipon with lots of reservations, as i was concerned with the sound quality. The pipe now has 700 miles on it and the tone has changed from when it was first installed. The sound is a little louder and a nicer tone. Cant attest to the sound difference with a tuner, as i installed the slipon, tuner, and la choppers air filter all at once. I didnt have to loosen the acorn nuts either. On a side note, the la choppers air filter assembly is a very nice quality and well manufactured.

Just installed my slip-on yesterday and got her out for a 40 smiles ride. This thing is simply awesome for the price. It's plenty loud for me. I would not want it any louder (but maybe I am getting too old as well). I turned the corner into my track and every person who was ahead of me (~150 plus feet) turned around or looked to see where the "noise" was coming from. This NEVER happened with the stockers.
You tube videos don't do it justice. Most videos are taken with cell phone cameras and they just cannot record the low tone and the percussion our ears hear with a live exhaust. I am sure the full exhausts are better sounding how could they not but anyone on a budget or the fence with drilling vs slip-on I doubt you will ever regret getting these. I will note that the decel pop will take some getting used to. The stock mufflers really drown this out.

BTW I chose not to drill mine after reading KraaazyMike was cited for his exhaust. I to live in CA and figured if I ever were to get cited I wanted the ability to easily go back to stock to get the fix-it ticket signed off. So I cannot comment on the difference between drilled and slip-on.
