After riding 2 up and 50 pounds of gear for 250 miles the Stock tires are showing extreme wear. The rear tire looks like it is a dune buggy's tire with sand flaps on every tread groove. Any one else ever see such a thing? Maybe I'm over the weight load limit on the tires? I have noticed bad wear on Bridgestones before that's why I have Metzlers on my other bikes.

Huh. Sounds like cupping. Which usually happens on a front tire from hard braking, I thought. The other thing it can make it worse is low tire pressure. Might be good to up the pressure in the rear tire a two or three psi riding with added weight...

Still... for it to become noticable in 250 miles of riding seems odd. You sure you didn't get a styrofoam tire or something?

In other news, the Metzlers pick up nails at least as well as the bridgestones. :(

I know in cars, if the tires aren't balanced properly you will also see cupping... Did you throw a tire weight?
I think I would notice an unbalance in the tires. And besides it's both tires. But I am used to seeing that kind of wear on the fronts of that brand on my other bikes They all have wear on the outside more than the center. I chalked it up to cheep tires and 90 percent of my rides are on twisty rough mountain roads that include some gravel. I'm going to try increasing air pressure for the ride home tomorrow. The Metzler seem to wear more even. And I was going through 2 rear tires (Bridgestone) to 1 front (Metzler) so now I have Metzlers on the front an rear of my Virago and the font of my V Star and soon to put 1 on that back too. Or maybe a Dunlap. If you guys have any suggestions on brands I would appreciate it.

That is interesting... it can happen you are on a "washboard" like freeway... lots of weight and a slightly low tire... what happens?? if the tire is low, and you have lots of weight over the rear tire and you are going straight on a road the has that "Bump.. bump.. bump.. bump" pattern to it... the tire gets hot and begins to "oscillate"(might not be the right word) up and down... when the tire is hot... at the "top" of the bump, when it has the least amount of weight.. he tire "Skips" slightly and chews of a tiny bit of rubber... it can happen quickly on motorcycle tires... usually happens to the front 1st.

Here is pictures of the wear. It is even on both sides and on the treads. Most of my travel was on 2 lane hwy paved with assault not freeway with concrete.

Sorry Toby, but I think this is a result of driver error. (Low air pressure to load weight). I have like many on this forum, over 5000 miles on these Bridgestones. They still look pretty much new. This also goes for the riders who complain about their brake pads. With this many riders on this forum, if there was problems or cheap parts you would be hearing about this more. I believe these problems are the result of the way the rider drives their bike. Drive it hard and you can expect it to show on the bike.

Yes MY LIFE I believe you might be partially right as I have come to the conclusion the the wear I am seeing is from a combination of the way I hit corners and the condition of these mountain goat tracks I ride on and the fact that I pushed the max weight load for the rear tire ,(2 up + gear over 400 pounds), and maybe low psi for the load. But Both my other bikes wore Bridgestones out within 5 to 6,000 miles with abnormal wear patterns. My Mechanic said it was do to the roads up here. So now I use Meztler and get 3,000 or more miles per tire than the Bridgestone and they handling better on these roads up here. And they don't show abnormal wear. The stock wide low profile tire on the Sryker is just not designed to handle the roads I ride on. I will up date my diagnosis after I have a chance to talk to my mechanic. On the break pad thing I use as little break as possible on these roads cause they will heat up and wear out fest on the seep grades I ride on. But that could also be causing some of the wear on the back tire relying on engine compression to slow me down.

I am comfortable with the Bridgestone on the front, little over 4k with little or no wear but what's up with the dis-coloring? Mine has a mud-brownish color to it. Tried washing and scrubbing but it won't come out.

That's funny I have the same brown on the sides walls of my front. It looks disgusting, was thinking maybe a little Amor all might clean it up.

Wow never heard such a thing. Is it on the contact surface or side wall or both? Maybe you got lucky and the chemical composition of the tire is brown and it is better than normal. lol. Wife says permanent pop stains, lol All jokes aside I'd like to know if you figure it out.
