Had a raccoon decide he'd rather chill out under the front tire than 20 feet away. It was able to still make it down into the street drains but I don't think he's doing so well either. As for the bike......

Does anyone know if insurance will cover a fall from an animal strike or if it's even worth filing a claim? I have progressive. The left grip, clutch lever, and mirror are scraped up pretty good along with the foot peg bracket being scraped up and bent. Also, from anyone that has experience doing body work, is this dent worth trying to have fixed or would it be better to replace the tank.

PS. I'm fine. saw the little bastard and was slowing down. Just wasn't quite fast enough. Hit it at about 20mph.

If you have full coverage they'll certainly cover it. The only question is if it will be listed as at fault for you. I assume it will be, so your insurance rates will go up a bit. Might be worth it, depending on the repair costs...

You can always withdraw the claim without penalty if you don't like what you hear from Progressive. I would explain what happen and give them a chance. Remember that the deductible, whatever it is on your policy, applies.

Glad you are OK, even tho the bike needs a little TLC now.
This is an oddball question but here goes:
From your picture of the tank dent, it shows that the decal is scuffed to metal, if possible can you "pick" at it with an x-acto or sumpthin and see if the decal will lift or peel off? Don't mess up any insurance business you may have pending. A lot of people on this forum have speculated as to how easy the decal might come up once the clear coat is scribed. You have a good opportunity to experiment a little to see what might work. Thanx in advance if you try this!

I had a way deeper dent and it was flattened out on the same side of my tank that I got removed and the whole bike painted for $550. As far as the levers and ****, the same things were damaged on mine and grips, levers, and foot controls for one side are about $300.

You should be able to get it all fixed for under $1000.

If you're near St. Louis. I got a guy who can do the dent and paint cheap.

Very good to hear that its just the bike that needs fixing, they are easier to fix than people! Make sure you tell your insurance company that "The Racoon just ran right out in front of me" Dont tell them you hit a racoon, it can make alot of difference in the claim.

glad you are okay. Yes, insurance will cover the damage. If you HIT the animal, it will be a comprehensive claim and will not be considered a chargeable accident. If you swerved to miss the animal and just laid it down, then it's a collision claim and IS chargeable. Now, you could possibly loss any accident free discount you might be getting, but the discount probably wouldn't be nearly as much as a new tank.

 Are things different on your side of the border. You want to have hit it. Its a $200 or $300 deductible that way, even if your carring a $500 plus on the bike. Not considered your fault if wildlife is the cause. When I hit a dear with my car I only had to pay $300. Have to prove it however, so call the police so they can see the animal.

Joe is right....
as a side note... I have the philosophy that is the animal is smaller than the front tire... go through it... if it is bigger than the front tire... go through it anyways... usually better than the trees on the side of the road....

It did actually run in front of me. I moved to the opposite side of the road (two lanes same direction). I didn't swerve to miss it. Just tried to slow down to a stop in case it made a stupid decision (which it did). I just wasn't fast enough. As far a proving I hit it, the impact didn't kill it on the spot. It was able to crawl into the drains on the side of the road before I even got the bike back off the pavement. So I'm not sure how that'll go over with insurance.

Doesn't FULL coverage mean your covered even if it's your fault? No mater what you hit? That's why a finance company will only finance a vehicle with FULL coverage. So even if it's your fault, what ever happens, you loose it around a corner and hit a tree, the finance company is insured that they do not loose anything or they wont finance you.

They will cover it no matter what with full coverage ins. But I have had the deductable reduced to $100, it may depend on your ins. I forget the term they use when something like this happens and its not your fault, you know like the"Mayhem" guy in all the comercials?
Mylife - I think that was what you were getting at? I've actually had an agent tell me that "it hit you right?" I guess if it is in the road and you could'nt avoid hitting it you were going too fast and it's your fault? But if it "jumps out" and you hit it, there's nothing you could do about it? Not totaly sure, just know it can be cheaper if you word it corectly.

BINGO, thats it Straightjacket. Its that the animal ran out in front of you or charged you and it was unavoidable. Anyone could drive stupid and crash their bike and say I tried to avoid hitting the animal. Always better if you have proof that it was a animal and not just you trying to avoid a careless driving. Yes, you are 100% covered no matter what, but if it was because of a animal your rates won't change like they would if you miss judge a curve.
