Just curious,

I was doing a search of taillight mods and came across this from Custom Dynamics:

http://www.customdynamics.com/Yamaha_tail_retro.htm

Scroll down for Stryker

One of our members from New Hampshire did this mod awhile back and said that he could not get the bike inspected afterward, the mod was not DOT approved for his state.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with this mod?

I started my career as a police officer and could not find anything wrong with the mod. I haven't been in the vehicle code for awhile, so I went over to my local PD today and showed the Sergeant a picture. He found nothing wrong with it either. Said he couldn’t even find anything to nitpick about it.

I’ll take a ride up to the dealer tomorrow and see what the service department has to say about it. Don’t want to take it off every year at inspection time.

Also, does anyone know of a similar taillight mod?

Thanks

The issue you often run into with integrated break lights is that blinkers are required to be spaced so many inches apart from one another. I think that is what causes these to not be DOT approved. I have the Custom LED light and though it may not be DOT approved...i've not had any issues in Texas. Heck i don't even run a plate light with my custom side-mount setup and don't have issues with that either. It wouldn't pass inspection without the plate lights but i don't get those anyways and never have any issues from the police.

Just move out into the sticks like me! We dont have to get our vehicles approved at all lol. Everyone runs around here with straight pipes on thier trucks and fuel chips turned up way to far on their deisle pickups and its all good.

Thanks skwerlee,

In Pa. turn signals aren't required, but maybe the integrated blinker/taillight combo could be an issue (too close together). I'll check it out at the dealer tomorrow and post what I find out.

Thanks

i used the smoked 2003 Yamaha YZF R1 tail light on mine, only a 20 dollar buy off ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/300768542232?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

The only thing was the wiring harness was set up a bit different but an easy fix, just had to switch some of the prongs around to match up with the correct ones in the Stryker harness.

Im from Pa and local garage said no worries on inspection as long as they work correctly

I was denied a sticker for the custom dynamics integrated tail light so i went out and bought two LED strips from Autozone for 8 bucks and wired them in and passed at a different location.

the strips are pretty much hidden on normal operation and I painted them so you dont see the inner workings... FYI, used map dot stickers to cover the LED when painting so you can peel it right off after revealing the LED.

Im in NH btw...

its BS and sometimes you can get a real asshat for an inspector that hates his job and will critique everything... good luck on whatever you decide....

Bikes were made to customize!!!

Until your LED's start dying and entire arrays start flickering on and off or just staying off completely. Several of us went this route and all of us had this problem. That's why you never see new threads recommending this. The custom dynamics is the only one proven to last longer than a few thousand miles. I hope you prove me wrong though. Good luck.

I was told by the local LEO that DOT requires 7" between turn signals and that's why I got pulled over.

no doubt...i rocked the zx636 light like many did on here and it went out pretty quick...so i upgraded to the Custom LED light and it's been running strong for several thousand miles!

Thank you all for the input.

I was at the dealer today. The owner told me yes and no for inspection.

If I come on a Tuesday, the four techs that work that day will pass it no problem.

The shop Foreman and another guy are by the book. He said they will shoot it down. They are off on Tuesdays.

He told me to come on a Tuesday and he'll guarantee it passes. I have known him for years, so I trust him. He has given me some great deals.

The stock arrangement is really hard for me to look at. Gotta make a change. :)
