I think the shorter one looks better, thankfully my wife is short like me so it should be plenty of support for her. I think that is what you will need to consider as I am sure you are looking for looks and functionality. I am planning on ordering one this week. Anyone know where the best price is on these?

Had the short and 115 lb wife hated it. We have the Tall Quick release now and she likes it much better.

The tall fits more of the aftermarket seats than the Yamaha short. Yamaha's own thicker touring seat is purported NOT to work with the short Yami backrest. Based on this I got the QR tall backrest and love it. My 11 year old son loves it. Another thing to consider is that most of the luggage (T-bags etc.) will fit the tall backrest much better or at least give you more choice in bag styles.
Not the best angle but this shows the tall QR backrest with luggage rack and a Kuryakin Mini Grand Tour bag on my bike . . . . .

Went with the tall for the extra support and comfort for my gf, and it has the added advatage of helping to lash down more gear for those longer trips.

I have the short chrome fixed mount rest with luggage rack now. I will be selling/trading it for the tall chrome rest. The wife wants the taller one. I also have a tall black fixed mount rest for sale/trade. Anyone interested?

I would say it is simple as this:

Short Back Rest : Better look, medium comfort
Tall Back Rest: Medium look, Better comfort

My girlfriend tried both ...she is 5'2'' 110 pounds. She prefered the tall for comfort without any doubt. So its your call ...look or comfort.
